"Our communities are the real ben-
ficiaries of the efforts of our volunteers.
Many of this province's major institutions -
libraries, museums, educational facilities,
all got their start from volunteers," said Li-
ly Munro, Minister of Citizenship and
Culture.
April 13 - 20 has been designated as
Volunteer Week across Ontario. In the
News -Record coverage area, four
volunteers has been selected and will be
honored at a special ceremony on May 12 in
Owen Sound.
' Doris Batkin
Doris Batkin, of Clinton, will receive her
15 year pin for the countless hours she has
volunteered to the Huron County Historical
Society.
Mrs. Batkin, who won a volunteer award
for her work with the Local Architectural
Conservation Advisory Committee
(LACAC) last year, was quite surprised
when she heard she had won this year.
"Our society president, Isabel Theedom,
said I was to put my name in. I said no, but
she insisted," said Mrs. Batkin.
During her years with the historical socie-
ty, Mrs. Batkin has served as secretary- '
treasurer and assistant secretary-treaurer.
However, her interest in history does not
stop with the historical society, she is a
member of several other groups and assists
whoever she can.
One of the groups Mrs. Batkin is involved
in is the Clinton LACAC, of which is a foun-
ding member. She has also been working on
the Clinton Women's Institute Tweedsmuir
history since 1947 and was the convenor for.
the Clinton Historical Book in both 1950 and
1975. She also worked on the Ontario Street
United Church History Book in 1950.
"I've answered queries that I've received
in the mail for years and I help families find •
their ancestors in the Clinton Cemetery,"
explained Mrs. Batkin. "I just enjoy doing
it."
Ethel Poth
Ethel Poth, of Bayfield, is a charter
member of the Huron County Historical
Society which began in 1964.
Mrs. Poth started her volunteer work
because she was interested in preserving
history.
"A country that does not value its past has
no future," she said.
For approximately five years, Mrs. Poth
held the pcisition of archivist and still main-
tains the position of chairperson on the ar-
chive board. She was also the first archivist
on the Bayfield .Branch of the Huron County
Historical Society, a title she held for ap-
proximately 10 years. • •
Mrs. Poth, a former teacher, also used her
research ability and her love for history to
help write the Bayfield Centennial Edition
of the„Bayfiehl Bugle in 1976. —
•
When asked if the announcement of winn-
ing the volimteer award was =expected,
Mrs. Poth said, "I certainly was surprised."
• She also fears that organizations which
depend bn volunteers may cease to exist if
more volunteers don't come forward.
"The Huron .County Historical Society is
badly in need of volunteers for Its work.
Unless younger people come in, it: will die a
natural death...There are just too:. many
organizations today (which require
volunteers)," she said.
Elva Metcalf
"I was shocked and taken back," said
Elva Metcalf, of Bayfield, when she heard
she had won an award for her ;volunteer
work .with the Huron County Historical
Society. "I feel there are many more who
deserve it more than I do."
Mrs. Metcalf joined the society in 1965,

Balfour, a question to which council could
not answer.
Original Use
According to Mayor Balfour, the parking
lot behind the town hall and library was set
up to "get the employees and merchants
off the street."
"If that was its original use, let's get it
back to that," said council members. I-)
A motion was passed to allow for open
parking; except in the designated areas
which are reserved for town employees.
The overnight parking bylaw is still in ef-
fect.
