Here, from left, actors Eleonore Prokop, Michael Kopsa, photo) Elizabeth Szathmary and Antoni Cimolino mime the growth of the Exhibition of recent acquisitions at AGO TORONTO - An exhibition of recent ac- quisitions for the Art Gallery of Ontario's caricature collection will take place in the Walter Trier Gallery and Anteroom beginn- ®ing April 5 and continuing to May 25. In 1976 the Trier -Fodor Foundation donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario a large group of drawings by humorist Walter Trier (1890-1951), together with the artist's collec- tion of folk toys, and a special fund to make possible an ongiong program of acquisitions and exhibitions of humorous, illustrative, and satirical graphic art. Through, this en- dowment the Gallery has acquired 211 draw- ings, prints, and watercolours, building a, comprehensive collection of caricatures from the 15th to the 20th century. Along with the acquisition of individual early works such as a large anonymous 16th -century German engraving, Head of a Jester, and an Italian 17th -century drawing of poets gazing at the moon, La luna ispiratrice dei poeti, by Pier Francesco Mola, the Gallery's collection . has largely focussed on French and English works of the 18th and 19th centuries. Caricature flourished in both countries during this time and prints by William Hogarth, James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson, and Honore Daumier, as well as many other artists, have been purchased over the last few years. Some of the most inventive caricatures of the late 18th and early 19th centuries were amateurs and the Gallery has acquired a considerable number of memorable images by unknown hands. Among the works in the exhibition are a watercolor of the French actor Coquelin Cadet by the late -nineteenth-century Edouard Vuillard; a drawing of a clown from the Carnival album of 1846 by Sulpice- Guillaume Gavarni; a 17th -century etching called The Fable of the Plucked Peacock by Daniel Schultz; and eight hand -coloured et- chings by James Gillray dating to the time of the Napoleonic wars. This selection of recent acquisitions demonstrates that the long-term goal for the collection has been to develop a group of works that will 'cover the entire history of caricature and that in turn will generate ex- hibitions focussing on important periods and figures in this history. : Dinasours are coming soon Dinosaiirs are coming to your library on Saturday, Apr. 5!
