MARCH 2(i 1986 S arts Clinton Morris need one more win On Tuesday, March 18 at Mitchell, the Clinton Atoms grabbed the first game in the best -of -five series for the WOAA Atom CC Championships by dumping Mitchell 5-3. Clinton 5 - Mitchell 3 Clinton's nifty little centre, Mark Liver- more paced the Clinton attack with two goals. Shawn iChipchase, Scott Jewitt and Jason Carter added the others. The first period was scoreless as both teams kept each other off balance with ex- cellent checking. But in the second period the pace seemed to open up a little more. At the 3:18 mark, Mark Livermore gave Clin- ton a 1-0 lead as he knocked in a rebound just outside the goal crease from a blue line shot off the stick of Scott Rathwell. AT 6:05 Jason Carter made it 2-0 as his backhand shot eluded the glove of the Mit- chell goalie. Shawn Chipchase and • Scott Jewitt had started the play at centre ice before Carter took the backhand shot for the goal. Forty-six seconds later Shawn Chip - chase increased the Clinton lead to 3-0 as he used Jason Carter as a decoy on a beautiful two on one rush up the ice. In the third period Mark Livermore's 24th goal of the season gave Clinton a comman- ding 4-0 Lead at 2:35 as he deflected a Chris Kennedy shot in from the right side of the face-off circle. Scott Rathwell also earned his second assist of the game. At this point Clinton seem to relax a little and it cost theas Mitchell scored two quick goals to nary w the lead to 4-2. But with just under two •nutes remaining in the game hard- working Scott Jewitt gave Clinton their in- surance marker. Jason Carter earned an assist on the goal. With 30 seconds Left and with their goalie sitting on the bench in favour of an extra attacker Mitchell's Duane Harmer scored the final goal to make the score 5-3. Clinton 2 - Mitchell 0 At the Clinton Community Centre on Mon- day, March 24, the Clinton Atoms grabbed a 2-0 Iead in the best -of -five series against Mit- chell as they hung on for a 2-0 victory behind the shutout goal tending of Derek Hoggarth. Time and, time again Derek came up with the big save to preserve the victory. It ,was Derek's eighth shutout of the season. • In the first period Clinton got the only goal they needed when Danny Wildfong scored with eight seconds left in the period. Scott Rathwell started the play as he broke down the ice on a three on one rush with Mark Livermore and Danny Wildfong. Just inside the blue line Rathwell shovelled a nice pass to Livermore who fed it to Wildfong at the lip of the crease. In the second period Jason Carter gave Clinton the insurance goal they needed as he scored on Shawn Chipchase rebound. It was Scott Shaddick who engineered the goal by keeping a clearing pass inside the blueline. He passed to Chipchase for the shot and Carter was there for the rebound. Clinton ran into a terrible rash 'of penalties in the third period as they gathered six penalties. ( Alan Rivet( photo) dockets beat O'Briens to win Optimist tourney CLINTON - The Clinton Rockets in- dustrial league team won the A champion- ship at the Clinton Optimist Club's second annual industrial league tourney at the arena on March 20, 22 and 23. The Rockets posted a close 5-4 victory over the Goderich O'Brien's Porkers in the A championship final. In the B champion- ship final, Blyth earned a narrow victory over Thedford by a 8-6 score. In reaching the A finals, Clinton, defeated the Zurich Buckeyes 6-4 and received a bye into the semi-finals as a team from I,ondoni failed to show up at, the tournament. The Rockets defeated Sarnia 5-2 in the semi- finals game to set up ,,the final against O'Briens Porkers. Blyth went into the B division round after • dropping their first game to the Ernie's Roadhouse team from Goderich by a score of 6-1. They then defeated Clinton's Hodges Milling in a 5-4 overtime game which was decided by a shoot-out. Blyth blasted Strat- ford in the semi-finals by a score of 7-3 to earn a berth in the B division finals against Thedford. Tournament organizer Don Shropshall said the tournament was well attended and a financial success, netting -between $700 and $800 for the weekend. Corn Spiel held at Vanastra Yes, spring has come and the farmers will soon be seen busily sweeping down the land: But on March 19 .they were seen at the Vanastra Curling Club sweeping down the ice for the annual Corn Spiel. All 64 curlers returned home with a prize after a tremendous day, thanks to the organizers Brian Falconer and Murray Adams. Two Vanastra teams came out on top in the Governor General's competition in Har- riston on Sunday. Bert Basker with his rink of Brian Hall, Lloyd Hayward and Henry Jansen and John Brownridge's rink of Jack McLachlan, Darrell Abbott and Claire Cox will now advance to the Regional Finals in Galt on April 12.
