Spring brin
By Janet Tench
With spring just around the corner,
nature's music is in the air. Canadian rock
is in the air as well. Some fine examples of
Canada's blossoming talent are the recor-
ding artists Equus, the Arrows, and Bruce
Cockburn.
Having won the FM 96 talent contest in
1985, Equus now has its long-awaited
eponymously titled album. Their blend of
progressive rock and love songs have made
them a local favorite. The two singles, from
the album, that received generous airplay
are When you Gonna Find the The and
Powerlife.
Although the band has just returned from
a tour up north, they are looking forward to
playing in Seaforth, April 10, 11 and 12. But
s new rnusic
their big news is that on April 2, Channel 10
will have a half hour special on them beginn-
ing at 7:30 p.m. This band is going places.
Seeing as Equus fronted for the Arrows on
New Year's Eve, it is only natural to men-
tion the Arrows next. For five years the Ar-
rows had been struggling out of Toronto.
"There's nothing else I'd rather have been
doing," said lead singer Dean MpTaggert.
At last it's paying off.
Their second album, The Lines are Open
is an immense success. Its, sound is distinc-
tive - each instrument is given an individual
sound rather than all of them being slamm-
ed together. Hence the singles Talk Talk and
Heart of the City have a neat pop feel.
"Music comes first", adds Dean. "Image
is important, but music is more important".
The Arrows are currently tr• -^ng Europe
where their album has been released in 18
different countries.
Finally, there is Bruce Cockburn, who is
touring to promote his 16th album, World of
Wonder. Bruce has always had strong
political views. Last year Rocket Launcher
verbalized his frustration with the United
States. Thus it is no surprise that with his
latest album he continues to attack that
government. The singles People See
Through You, as:he explains in concert is to
let the States know that we're on to all the
facades they put on. It gives me hope in
these troubled times to see someone who is
willing to take a stand for what's right.
This is going to be a good season.

Ontario will increase use of prescribed
burns five -fold to prepare more area for
forest renewal under a new $3.6 -million pro-
ject jointly funded under the Canada -
Ontario Forest Resource • Development
Agreement (COFRDA).
The 'forest renewal enhancement project
was announced recently by Gerald Mer-
rithew, federal Minister of State (Forestry )
and Ontario Natural Resources Minister
Vincent Kerrio. It allows Ontario to increase
its original prescribed burn target to 230
square kilometres from 50 square
kilometres over the next four years.
Prescribed burns are an economical way
to clear away debris on logged -over areas
and stands of dead trees to prepare forest
sites for replanting, seeding or natural
regeneration.
"COFRDA is a $150 -million five-year co-
operative forestry agreement which pro-
vides for increased forest renewal and other
intensive forest management activities
through to 1989," Mr. Merrithew said. "The
key aim is to improve forest management
and provide greater employment oppor-
tunities in the forestry sector."
"Prescribed burning is an effective forest
management tool that has been used in On-
tario for 30 years," Mr. Kerrio said. "This
new project will allow Ontario to con-
siderably expand its forest renewal pro-
grams."

„ The Ministry of Natural Resources will
use the project funds to hire five additional
specialists to develop targets, plans, par-
ticipate in burns and train staff.
An additional weather technician will also
be hired to provide special forecasts. There
will also be up to 15 five -member crews
trained in fire control and two senior fire
technicians to supervise extra fire crews.
Decision-making aids and tools to assist in
planning and conducting prescribed burns
will also be developed and implemented.
