United Co-operatives of Ontario (UCO)
had a net savings of $2,007.000 in fiscal 1985,
with sales of $482,694,000, and a gross
Margin improvement of 3.2 per cent or $2.3
million states UCO's fiscal 1985 annual
report.
The report states further that working
capital has improved to a positive position
of $66,898,000 and that the financial restruc-
turing undertaken during fiscal 1985 has
resulted in a better opportunity for UCO to
continue to make earnings and build finan-
cial reserves. t
"Our positive position," reports George S.
May, chief executive officer, "is a reflection
of a number of events". May lists these as
the `thard)work and dedication of numerous
®
stakeho1Z ers, improved operations and the
loyalty and commitment of members and
customers".
May also credits the turnaround to the
restructuring of UCO's financial base, 1983
and 1984 business decisions to sell some
assets, and an exceptionally good spring.
The $2 million earnings was the first earn-
ings for UCO since 1980.
Bob Down, UCO president, described the
turnaround as "modest and successful. We
made a profit and we maintained or increas-
pa mgrlrnt chore in mast nnmmnrlitipq
despite a generally declining market place.
At the same time," he states in the report,
"we must be realistic. The turnaround has
only begun - there is a long road yet to travel
before we have a sound financial base."
"However," he adds, "the Board is cer-
tain UCO is well positioned to meet member
needs."
UCO is the largest farm supply and
marketing co-operative in Ontario, pro-
viding a complete line of farm inputs, in-
cluding feed, seed, fertilizer, petroleum and -
hardware, through about 100 retail outlets
across the province. It also markets
livestock and grain. UCO is owned by 48,600
individual members and 45 member co-ops
representing another 39,000 members.
In discussing future directions, May in-
dicated that the improvement was good, but
"there is no permanent improvement
without significantly better sales trends. In
effect we must gain market share from our
competitors. This means that if we are to
compete effectively, we must build on our
strengths. To be competitive, we must take
a new look at opportunities in the market
place and the competitors we face: We must
establish a new leadership in service, pro-
ducts, and processing technologies."
