Clinton Optimists host
second annual tournament
CLINTON - The Clinton Optimists are
preparing for their second annual industrial
hockey tournament which gets underway on
March 20 and continues on March 22 and 23.
The 16 team tournament will feature
teams from Clinton, Goderich, Bayfield,
Blyth, I,ucknow, Zurich, Stratford, New
Hamburg, London, Toronto, Sarnia, Thed-
ford and Port Albert. Each team will play at
Least two games.
An addedattraction to the tournament is a
breakfast of eggs, sausages, toast and juice
to be cooked by the wives of the Optimist
members. Breakfast will be held on March
22 and 23 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the
auditorium at the Clinton Arena.
First round action will see Goderich's Er-
nie's team against Blyth at 7 p.m. followed
by Bayfield playing Clinton's Hodges. The
final game of the night will have O'Brien's
from Goderich facing -off against Stratford.
On March 22, Green Machine, from
Goderich, will play Lucknow at 8 'a.m.;
Zurich will take on Clinton's Rockets at 9:30
a.m. and London will play New Hamburg at
12:30 p.m. The final game of the first round
will see Sarnia against Thedford.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to'
the Optimists who will put the money back
into the community through a community
project.

Atoms square off against
Mitchell in WOAA finals
The Clinton Atoms opened up their best of
five WOAA "CC" finals Monday night
against Mitchell in Mitchell: The score was
unavailable at press time. The second game
of the series will be played in Clinton next
Monday night, March 24 at 7 p.m.
During the past week, Clinton collected
two wins while losing one to Goderich.
On Sunday, March'9, the Atoms travelled
to Exeter. They were trying to avenge a 5-4
loss to Exeter from last week. After Exeter
had taken a 1-0 lead in the first period, the
Clinton boys rallied for three second period
goals by Shawn Chipchase, assisted by Scott
Shaddick; Jason Carter, assisted by Mark
King; and Danny Wildfong, assisted by
Chris Kennedy. Before the second period
had ended, Exeter narrowed Clinton's lead
to 3-2.
In the third stanza, Clinton outscored Ex-
eter four goals to one to take th victory 7-3.
Scoring for Clinton in the third were Craig
McAsh unassisted; Shawn Chipchase,
assisted by Scott Jewitt and Mark King;
Chris Kennedy, assisted by Danny
Wildfong; and Shawn Chip case closed the
scoring with an unassisted tally.
Clinton 16 -Brussels 0
In an exhibition game on Monday, March
10, Clinton Atoms crushed Brussels by a
score of 16-0.
Pacing the Clinton attack was Shawn
Chipchase with five, goals and 'five assists.
He was followed closely by linemate Scott
Jewitt who had eight points on three goals
and five assists.
Chris Kennedy also turned in an excellent
game as he tallied four goals to go along
with two assists.
Jason Carter added to the Clinton point
splurge by scoring two goals ,,and assisting
on two others. Nathan Burns, up from the
Novice team, scored a goal also.
Danny Wildfong, Shane MacDonald and
Scott Wright added two assists each while
Burns added an assist.
Goderich 4 -Clinton 3
On Saturday, March 15 Goderich came to
town and eked out a 4-3 victory over the.
local boys.
Clinton opened the scoring in the first
period at the 1:47 mark as Nathan Burns
converted passes from Danny Wildfong and
Chris Kennedy to score.
In the second period, Goderich outscored
Clinton three goals to two to even the score
at 3-3 after two periods. Scoring for Clinton
in this period were Shawn Chipchase and
Scott Jewitt. Jason Carter, with some ex-
cellent flay -making, assisted on both se-
cond period goals. Scott Rathwell also drew
an assist on Jewitt's marker.
Goderich's Paul Wheeler scored what pro-
ved to be the winning goal with less than five
minutes left as his shot cleanly beat Clinton
goalie Derek Hoggarth.
Special challenge .days
offered for motorcycles
Conestoga College is issuing an invitation
to Class M motorcycle licenced drivers to
test their skills at special Challenge Days on
Apr. 19 and 20 in Waterloo.
Again this year, Conestoga is offering its
popular Motorcycle Driver Training course,
sactioned by the Canada Safety Council. The
Challenge Days are intended to allow ex-
perienced drivers to see if they practice the
high level of safe driving skills that students
acquire in the course.
The test course, similar to the test re-
quirements necessary for a Class M licence,
will be open on the Challenge Days from 1-4
p.m. at Conestoga's Waterloo campus, 435
King St. N.
There is no charge for the test. Drivers
need only arrive with a mechanically sound
motorcycle and proof of liability insurance.
However, participants under the age of 18
must be accompanied by a parent or
guardian.
For more information contact the Conti-
nuing Education office at the Waterloo cam
pus, (519) 885-0300. Office hours are noon - 8
p.m. from Monday through Thursday and
noon - 4 p.m,/on Friday.
