WI is ahead of the times Agriculture has always been of vital con- cern to all members of the Women's In- stitutes. Beatrice Reeves, President of Federated Women's Institutes of Canada, has said that the Women's Institute (WI) message is "If you eat then you are involved in agriculture". WI members from every province were represented at the Second National Farm Women's Conference at Prince Edward Island. When the conference reached an im- pass as to its final direction it was Dr. Ellen McLean, a WI member and President Of Associated Country Women of the World who provided the solution. The Federated Women's Institutes of On- tario (FWIO) at their November Board Meeting, passed the following resolution. "That FWIC be asked to arrange a meeting between representatives of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario and the three provincial leaders to gain an assurance and develop a time frame for the positive action they have promised on behalf of farmers". The (FWIO) was the first group to be ap- proached to provide financial support for the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Pro- gram, which they did. I saw the WI members as visionaries. A lot of people perceive the WI today as being behind the times, but their support of a project like this (Advanced Agricultural Leadership Pro- gram) shows the WI, in fact very much in tune with, and even a little ahead of the times." At the local level, all branches of WI have an Agricultural Convenor and throughout the year they have programs on agricultural related topics. Many WI members are active on their local fair boards, leading local 4-H clubs and assisting on the family farm. Elgin County Women's Institute in 1985 assisted the Elgin Federa- tion of Agriculture on their successful coun- ty caravan tour of farms in Elgin County. Now FWIO is providing a Leadership Development Workshop for key resource people who in turn will go back to their areas and provide further workshops 6h a local level.
