BAYFIELD - Bayfield citizens can breathe a sigh of relief over the large sum of money needed to restore the ice plant at the arena - the expense has been averted. Clerk Pat Graham reported that the $10,000 to replace the condensor or the $1,600 to repair it will not be needed. A closer in- spection at the arena by the Diamond Refrigeration Co. last week revealed the condensor was not the cause of the ice plant breakdown. The refrigeration corppany found a collapsed filter was not allowing the freon, a component of ice making, to run through the system. Long Hill Road Update In other business, council has made another attempt to gain funding for the Long Hill Road restabilization project. They have applied for a grant through the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC). At the council meeting on February 17, Clerk Pat Graham said he applied for a sup- plimentary grant for $215,000 through the MTC. The total subsidy represents the lesser estimated cost of the two repair alter- natives recommended in the Golder engineering report on the sinking road - released last August. The $215,000 is the estimated cost of using rip -rap construction compared to $555,000 using sheet -piling. Mr. Graham said if the application is ap- proved, the village could enter into a three- way agreement with MTC and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. He estimated, under this arrangement, the village may be expected to pay $50,000. During the councillor's reports at the meeting, Councillor Helen Owen recom- mended council issue a press release °to the news media updating the Long Hill Road situation. Reeve Dave Johnston, in response, said council currently is applying for funding for the project. Until the funding is in place, work cannot begin on the reconstruction of the road. In the interim, Road Superintendent Rick Penhale is monitoring the slippage of the road which will continue through the period of spring rains. .
