THRILL OF WINNING—AGONY OF DEFEAT
Monte Carlo Night in Bayfield saw many whiners and many losers. In Barb Sturgeon's
case (left), she experienced both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat while play-
ing crown and anchor. Her mother, Judy Huntley, did the spinning. ( Anne Narejko

Brewers drop
By Helen Owen
HAYFIELD - Good news this week is that
the expensive replacement thought to be re-
quired for the arena has, on further in-
spection by the Diamond Refrigeration
Company, proved unnecessary. However,
due to the problems the games scheduled for
February 18 were cancelled and'reschedul-
ed for February 24.
()n February 21 both games were lopsided
affairs. In the first the Varna Racers. con-
' tinned' the annual playoff drive by
14-4 decision to Varna.
demolishing the Brewers 14-4. Leading the
Racers onslaught was .Ron Keys with four,
while •Lorne Taylor had the hat -trick. Dan
and Allan Taylor each had a pair, as singles
went to Scott Consett and Bill Carnochan.
For the Brewers it was Rob Chapman and
Darin Telford each with a pair.
The second game saw the Knighthawks
crunch the Puckers 11-1. John Stanley led
the Hawks with three, while Stu Asher,
Steve Telford and Bill Courtney each had a
pair.

BAYFIELI! - Ken Scotchmer was admit-
ted to Clinton, Public Hospital on February
18 and his many friends wish that his condi-
tion will soon improve, and they send him
good wishes for a speedy recovery.
Also on the sick list, and a patient in Clin-
ton, is Gertie Kew of Clan Gregor Apart-
ments. Good' wishes also go to her for a
.quick recovery and return home.
Another of the sick list is "Dynamic"
Dora Warwick. A keen participator i;1 so
many Bayfield projects, Dora succumbed to
a seasonal cold, but that was just a start and
her troubles were made worse by a nasty
fall which resulted in bad bruising and a
broken wrist. After treatment at St.
Joseph's Hospital Dora is now at home, but
knowing her resilient spirit she will no doubt
soon overcome her disabilities.

The speaker was Gayle Sussman who
outlined the procedures in connection with
grants under the building, rehabilitation
and improvement campaign to assist with
the conservation of designated properties.
She stressed the importance of putting in
place a series of steps so that the necessary
criteria was fully met, and understood by
the applicant. Her talk was illustrated by a
series of slides showing how failure to
monitor projects. and conform with the re-
•quirements could,prove disastrous.
As committees of Municipal councils, Ms.
Sussman said, LACACs had a responsibility
to engender good and co-operative relation-
ships with municipal administrators, as
well as fostering local support and interest.
The meeting concludes with questions and
an opportunity for members of the groups
represented to share experiences, problems
encountered and means of overcoming
them. For the Bayfield representatives
( Charles Rogers, Pat Muratori, Arlene Kok
and Helen Owen) the trip was well wor-
thwhile and encouraging because many of
the problems discussed were ones which the
Bayfield LACAC had met, and overcome.
Monte Carlo Night
On February 22, the Bayfield Recreation
Committee held anqther Monte Carlo night
in the community centre. It was well attend-
ed, and everyone seemed to enjoy the social
atmosphere and chance to try their luck.
Committee chairman, Ruth Wise, was
grateful to the willing helpers who manned
the tables and also to those who had
generously donated prizes. A sign of the
times and the effectiveness of advertising
'Don't Drink and Drive' was reflected in a
preference for coffee and soft drinks, and
even more important was the fact that
everyone, enjoyed themselves while volun-
tarily observing the injunction.
