co-ordinate their cummerbund, bow tie
( and pocket puff if they're wearing one)
with the color of the bridesmaids' gowns.
Some particularly discriminating clients,
who want "an absolutely perfect match,"
will bring in the actual material used for
the bridesmaids' gowns and the store will
custom make the groom's accessories
from this fabric, he says.
Other grooms decide to choose their ac-
cessories in colors with contrast, but
don't clash with, the bridesmaids'
dresses — bright red` is a popular color.
Gone are the days when the ushers,
..best man and groom were lined up like
tin soldiers, in their mass-produced,
cookie -cutter uniforms. Only 30 to 40 per
cent of today's grooms select the exact
same styles for each member of the
groom's entourage.
Instead, many are discovering the art
of complementary dressing, giving them
"all sorts of room to move," says Golds-
tein. For instance, the groom may opt for
a tailcoat, the best man for a tailcoat and'
vest and the ushers for dinner jackets all
in the same color and style.
New designs in formal wear
Sophisticated couples planning wed-
ding this year have more high fashion
alternatives than ever, as prominent
European and North American designers
bring their formal wear lines to Canada.
According to Joseph Hecht, president
of Classy Formal Wear, Canada's largest
formal wear company, these European
and North American designers are set -
ting
e -ting a new standard for Canada.
"It's evident in the lines we're offering if
this year," Hecht said. "Designers have
had a real impact."
For 1986, Classy is introducing an ex-
clusive line of John Warden formal wear
which they are adding to an inventory
that already includes Yves St. Laurent
and Enrico Lumbrosi.
Bracelets
big for men
Bracelets were once an indispensable
part of every well-dressed man's attire,
worn by everyone from King
Tutankhamun to Shakespeare. Now that
men are rediscovering their jewelry
heritage, bracelets are back in a big way.
Wrist chains with bold, interesting links
are among the most popular styles. The
identification bracelet, introduced by
World War II G.I.'s, continues in
'popularity. A modern variation is the
heavy chain linked to equally bold letters
spelling out a man's name or initials.
New kinds of wrist action for men include
cuff and bangle bracelets in shiny or tex-
. tured finishes, as well as wire and clamp -
on styles.
Wedding
facts
The traditional wedding is back in style
these days, with the average cost of
walking down the aisle more than $4,000,
according to Bride's magazine, which
puts the average cost of a reception at
$2,000.
The traditional rule that the bride's
family pays for everything has blurred
somewhat, and often the groom's family
pitches in.
One of the major costs of a wedding is
the bridal gown. A recent survey pegged
the average cost of the bride's gown at
about $400. Most veils, which are extra,
cost more than $100. Bridesmaids dresses
can cost $70 to $180 each.
The John Warden line features a black
shadow -weave tuxedo and another in a
rich grey.
The Italian wool fabric of the John
Warden shadow -weave is stunning. It has
the presence of the classic black tuxedo
with the subtle pinstripe in the same col-
or giving it a richness that is unusual to
basic black.
"Couples who rent formal wear today
are very much aware of quality and are
more fashion -conscious than ever,"
Hecht said. "They demand the best. We
try hard to give them what they want,
whether it's the latest colour accessories
in magenta, teal or royal blue for the
"Miami Vice" look or more traditional
styles and colours.'
