CLINTON - In the last article, l stated the
Christian Reformed Church had its roots in
USA. I'd like to elaborate on the history of
the church a little bit more.
Its history began really after the 80 years
war with Spain m the year 1648. Frain that
time on the Reformed Church became the
official church in the Netherlands instead of
the Roman Catholic Church. This brought
its own problems. When the church was
persecuted, it remained true to its doc-
trines, but with freedom, it began to stray.
In 1816, King William I took away the
government of the church and made the
Dutch Reformed Church the state church.
Ironically, when groups of seceders broke
away from this church to meet separately,
they persecuted in much the same way as
when the Catholic church was the state
church.
It was a group of these seceders who came
to Michigan. in the early 1800s. At first they
joined the Dutch Reformed Church, which
was, -already in the US since the founding of
New Ain'sterdam 200 years.earlier. But that
lasted only a few years, since they saw some
of the same problems in the Dutch Reform-
ed Church which had led to secession in the
Netherlands.
In 1857, the Christian Reformed Church
was formed, and was called the Holland
Reformed Church. Later it was called the
True Dutch Reformed Church. Still later it
was the Holland Christian Reformed Chur-
ch, and finally was shortened to Christian
Reformed Church.
In those early years, the dutch language
and heritage played an important part in the
church, and was used as a means of in -
sulating the church from outside influences.
One got the impression that God spoke and
understood only Dutch! However, English
finally won out, and is now used exclusively.
The Church grew from that beginning
through itnmigration, especially after
World War II when it really grew in Canada.
The Clinton church was organized in 1948.
The local church is quite large now and in
an effort to promote communion, and to br-
ing the congregation closer together,
district meetings are held occasionally.
Here small groups discuss a common topic
and have fellowship. These were held on
December 16 at various homes.
also survived by his mother, Mrs. Lillie
West of London and by eight grandchildren.
Mr. West was well known in the Bayfield
conununity as he ran an antique shop in the
village.
A private funeral and committal services
were held at the Ball and Falconer Funeral
Horne, Clinton, on February 17. Rev. James
Bechtel of Wesley -Willis United Church of-
ficiated. Interment in the Bayfield
Cemetery.

Why is there no clergy in
—the Baha'i Faith?—
For the first time in history the
Message of God is written by the
Prophet in His lifetime. Mankind is
becoming educated in all countries.
Self investigation of truth is the
first obligation for this age. The
message of Baha'u'llah contains
specific laws and principles and a
specific structure for an elected
administration.
