Unit discusses Lent

WALTON - The Walton 1 Unit held their
February meeting on February 12 in the
church basement.
Call to worship was given by Elva Wilbee
with Margery Huether the pianist for the
hymn. Berva Watson read scripture, Phyllis
Mitchell gave meditation with points on
Lent followed by prayer. Gloria Wilbee sang
a solo accompanying herself with guitar.
Margery Huether took the topic on Lent,
leading in a panel discussion assisted by
Viola Kirkby and Edith Wey. Bonnie Ram-
ble spoke on many interesting facts of Lent
and Ash Wednesday that follows Shrove
Tuesday. Phyllis Mitchell gave the Early
Black Foot Prayer. A meditation led by
Elva Wilbee and a hymn closed the portion
Of the Meeting.
Marie Coutts presided for the business.
Audrey Hackwell read minutes. Viola
Kirkby gave the treasurer's report in the
absence of Doreen Hackwell.
Dates to remember brought from the ex-
ecutive meeting were the Thankoffering on
April 20 at 2 p.m. World Day of Prayer,
March 7 at St: Ambrose Church, Brussels.
May 4 is the date set for the music night.
Easter Sunday service has been changed to
11:30 a.m.
Unit ladies plan to put a quilt in on Mon-
day at the home of Viola Kirkby. Crib quilts
are to be made and donated to the Victoria
Hospital, London.
The meeting closed with prayers followed
with a social half-hour during lunch served
by Olene Dennis, Gloria Wilbee and Annie
Reid.
Celebrates birthday
Relatives gathered at the home of Nelson
and Annie Reid on Saturday evening to
celebrate Nelson's 90 birthday. Those pre-
sent were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ryan and
families; Edna Hackwell; Mr. and Mrs.
Harvey Mcllwain; Jean Scott; Mr. and Mrs.
Campbell Wey and Mr. and Mrs. Doug
Fraser.
The evening was spent playing euchre
with prizes going to Mr. McIlwain, Jack
Ryan, Nelson Ryan and Ann Ryan. This was
followed by lunch. Nelson was the recipient
of many gifts.
Personals
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Baan visited on
Saturday with former Walton residents Mr.
and Mrs: Dave Watson, Sadie McDonald
and Ernie Stevens at the. Rammeloo Guest
Home.
John Huether who is attending the Guelph
Ladies' Club
hears legend
University, spent a few days at the home of
his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ray, Huether.
Mary Humphries and Leona McDonald
went on the Huron East Institute bus trip to
Toronto where they attended the flower
show at the International Center on
February 14.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson Webster of Clinton
and Earl Watson, R.R 1, Blyth were supper
guests on February 16 with Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Huether and John.
Wenda Stroop and boys of Palmerston
visited on February 16 with the former's
mother Mary Humphries.
Church News
Dorothy Sholdice greeted worshippers on
February 16 morning at Duff's United. Bon-
nie Lamble took as the sermon "Jesus'
temptation and ours."
The official board meeting is to be held
February 23 at the home of Emerson and
Phyllis Mitchell.
Valentine Euchre
The. Walton Women's Institute sponsored
a Valentine euchre in the community hall on
February 11 with 10 tables in play.
Winners were Dorothy Townsend, Harvey
Dolmage, Annie Reid, Ted Mills and Bert
Daer.
Special draws from tally cards were won
by Millar Richmond and Nora Kelly.
The committee in charge of euchre, were
Helen Craig, Viola Kirkby and Marion
Godkin.
The next euchre scheduled for March 11.
A noon luncheon will be served at the hall on
February 19 by Institute ladies.
SUMMERVILLE - Twelve members and
two visitors met at Verna Gibbings for the
February 12 meeting of the Summerhill
Ladies Club: The president, Lorna Ellis,
welcomed those present.and thanked Verna
for her hospitality..
Thank you's were received from Phyllis
Tyndall and Family and Children's Ser-
vices. Amy Gerrits won the raffle.
For program, Jane Van Spengen read,
'The Legend of St. Valentine' and a
humorous, poem, `Farmers on Strike.' Joy
Vodden read `Hearts in the Right Place'
from Gisele Ireland's book, Hog Wild.
A scarf -tying workshop was conducted by
Evelyn Merrill.
The March 12 meeting will be at the home
of Ruth Jenkins at 2:30 p.m. Program and
lunch will be looked after by Hazel Watkins;
Sandra.Westerhout and Margaret Wright.
For roll call, members are to name a
Canadian town or city and an industry of
same.
Bayfield euchre
BAYFIELD-There was a good turn out for
the games played on February 12 with eight
tables. Results were as follows: ladies' high
- Pearl Hutchison; ladies' low - Margaret
Dowson; ladies' lone hands - Jessie Blair;
men's high - John Lindsey; men's low - Glen
Dowson;• men's lone hands - Frank McClin-
chey. The next meeting will be on February
26.
