Communtty extends sympathy

Mettnorial Hospital. - All the members signed a get well card for
Isabel Colson who is a patient at University
Hospital in London. The nominating
committee of June Fothergill and Helen
Lawson asked for help to put on the annual
meeting and banquet slated for April 9 with
Ehma Jewitt and Alice Buchanan to form a
committee to look after the arrangements.
It was moved to purchase four teapots, the
new Huron Atlas, a meat thermometer and
to pay honorariums. Donations were
granted to the Earland Lee Museum ($25)
and the 90th anniversary scholarship ($25).
The next meeting will be the World Affairs
meeting on March 12. The guest speaker will
be Ken Campbell. Visitors are welcome.
After the meeting, the members worked
at clipping newsworthy items for the
Tweedsmuir Book. Lunch was served by
Alice Buchanan and Helen Lawson.
WI Cards
Nine tables of euchre players attended the
WI card party on February 14. The winners
were, ladies' high - Dorothy Daer; lone
hands - Ruby Dolmage; ladies' low -
Heather Fothergill; men's high - Lorne
flunking; lone hands - Clarke Stanley;
men's low - Watson Reid; special Valentine -
remember the 90th anniversary of the WI Shuffleboard
will be held next year and the Leadership Ten players turned out at the shuffleboard
Development Conference will be held in matches on February 12. The high scorer
Toronto on February 25 and 26. Lois Elliott, was Reg Lawson. The next rounds of
the district president, will be attending this shuffleboard will be held at the same place
and time on February 19.
United Church
Greeting the congregation for the the
Sunday service were Rev. Snihur and Bert
Lyon. The ushers were Len Archambault,
Carl Nesbitt, Bob Trick and Cliff
Saundercock.
A hymn sing, led by Rev. Snihur, was held
before the services. The cross for Lent was
decorated by the Bosman family. Alan and
Barbara Bosman placed a crown of thorns
on topiif the cross.
It was announced that on February 23
Sharon Benson of London will be playing a
special mini -concert as the congregation
dedicates the new church organ. The
skating party for the congregation will be
held at the Clinton Arena next on February
23 at'3 p.m.
For Children's Time, the youngsters sang
and also received a lesson about Lent. The
junior teachers for Sunday School were Lori
Bromley and Kerri Szusz.
The anthem for Sunday was accompanied
by organist Lisa Duizer and sung by the
choir under the direction of Marsha Szusz.
The sermon was Lent - A Time for Personal
Prayer.and Devotions. - •
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allen spent the
weekend snowmobiling at Red Bay Lodge.
Jean Scott spent the weekend with Mr.
and Mrs. Nelson Reid of Walton, celebrating
Nelson's 90th birthday on February 16.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Szusz on their 30th wedding anniversary on
February 18.
WI Meeting
The Tweedsmuir Workshop meeting was
held at the home of WI President Helen
Lawson on February 12. Mrs. Lawson
welcomed the members and the Opening
Ode and Mary Stewart Collect was
repeated. Roll call asked the members
about "a way our ancestors had of
predicting the weather without TV or
radios." The roll call was answered by, 15
members.
The minutes from the last meeting and the
treasurer's report were read by secretary -
treasurer Alice Buchanan. The
correspondence consisted of thank you notes
from Ida Durnin, Hattie Wood, Alice
Davidson and her mother Grace Fairey.
A letter was read from Charlotte Johnson
from Home and Country. The members

UCW!earns about native Indians

BELGRAVE-The afternoon Unit of the
Belgrave UCW met in the church school
room for their February meeting. Sara
Anderson opened the meeting with an In-
dian Prayer.
The minutes of the previous meeting were
read, treasurer's report and sick and shut-in
report were given.
Mrs. Ross Higgins used the Moravian
code of living, hymn and prayer for the wor-
ship service. 4ie Bible study was conducted
by Mrs. Glenn Coultes taken froZ i Luke.
The program was continued on the native
Indians. Mrs. Jim Hunter told the story of
Alberta Billy from the Mandate and a per-
sonal testimony of an Indian couple from.
Brantford. The Native Church Signals New
Directions was read by Mrs. Lawrence
Taylor.
The annual meeting of the United Church
Women of London Conference will be held
April 14 and 15 at Central United Church,
Stratford. Register by March 21 for billet
and meals. •
Westminster Weekend, London, will be
held May 30 -June 1 and Alma College, St.
Thomas, August 8-11.
Knox Church News
Inspiring sacred music with Mrs. George
Procter as organist, welcomed the
members of Knox United Church, Belgrave
as well as parentsand relations of the
Belgrave Brownies and their leaders: Mrs.
Darryl Culbert, Mrs. William McKeon and
Mrs. Robert Young to the Sunday morning.
service which was conducted by the Rev.
John G. Roberts.
The Children's Choir, with organ accom-
paniment, sang, then joined the Brownies to
fill the four central front pews.
Bake Sale Success
The First Belgrave Brownie Pack held a
successful bake sale at the Institute Hall on
February 15.
The enthusiastic young ladies sold many
items at the "Kids" table as well as a large
variety of baked goods.
Doris Carmichael was the lucky winner of
a Smurfette cake.
Theme Is Love
The Women's Missionary Society held
their meeting on February 10 in Knox
Presbyterian Church. Ivy Cloakey presided
and opened with the Call to Worship follow-
ed by scripture by Mrs. Garner Nicholson.
• Agnes Youngblut read the meditation on
the day's theme "Love". Mrs. Mac Scott led
in prayer and a hymn was sung.
Reports were given by the -secretary and
treasurer and 28 sick and shut-in visits were
recorded.
Margaret Dunbar gave a reading on Dr.
George Matheson who, though blinded at an
early age, became a renowned preacher and
wrote the hymn 0 Love that will not let me
go.
Margaret Sierstsema gave a reading and
Mrs. William Dalrymple read a poem.
Mrs. Cloakey closed the meeting with
prayer.
Euchre
Nine tables were in play at the weekly
euchre which was held in the WI Hall on
February 12. Winners were: Mrs. Les Vin-
cent, Pearl Shiell, Eva McGill, Les Vincent,
Albert Cook, Mrs. Garner Nicholson, Mrs.

Mrs. William Coulfes and Mrs. Ross Hig-
gins attended the Huron -Perth Presbyterial
Executive meeting at 10 a.m. February 10 at
the Ontario Street United Church, Clinton.
Mrs. Howard Zettler and Sherry of RR 4,
Walkerton and Nancy Jones of Chepstow
visited on Saturday with Mrs. Elizabeth
Procter.
Marjorie Procter of London visited over
the weekend with her mother, Elizabeth
Procter.
Dr. and Mrs. Brian Nuhn and son David

Assessment
A letter has been received from the
Huron County Assessment Office, thank-
ing council for its co-operation and for pro-
viding accommodation for the recent Open
House sessions held in Blyth. Forty-three
assessments were re -checked as a result of
these Open House sessions. •
Waste Disposal Site
Ministry of the Environment Abatement
Officer Larry Struthers informed council
in a letter that an inspection of the
village's waste disposal' site found the
cable used to secure the access to the site
was not locked across the access road and
no site supervisor was 'on duty. He said this
was a violation of Ontario Regulation 309
under the Environmental Protection Act.
HA also pointed out problems with the
burning of domestic refuse and said it is
the municipality's responsibility to take
whatever steps are necessary to stop such
burning. And he suggested a clean-up of
litter along the north boundary of the pro-
perty.
Council will acknowledge receipt of this
letter which will also be brought to the at-
tention of waste disposal site personnel so
corrective measures can be taken.
