Clinton peewee team
ca tures tournament
ZURICH - When Clinton and Zurich last
met, they played to a 6-6 tie. This meeting an
improved Clinton team overpowered a tired
Zurich team by the score of 11-2.
Clutton 11- Zurich 2 •
Curtis McCone proved to be a ' scoring
machine notching six goals and assisting
with three others, followed by Andrew
Dykstra with three goals and five assists.
Greg Taylor and Gavin Hunter notched Clin-
ton's other two goals. Darren Stevenson
played a strong game controlling the puck in
front of his net.
Clinton 111- Lucan 1
Clinton leapt to an early lead in their
game against Lucan when Chris Johnson
potted a Shawn Chipchase pass into the cor-
ner of the net in the first minute of play. A
fewminutes later Curtis McCone skated the
puck out of his own end and around the en-
tireLucan team and fired a shot into the cor-
nerx Clinton's third goal came when Scott
Jewitt stopped a Lucan clearing pass at the
blue line and passed it in front where Gavin
Hunter and Greg Taylor scrambled over the
puck before Jason Fleet finally netted the
puck. Gavin Hunter scored, two similar
goals as defencemen Darren McAsh and
Scott Jewitt fired shots from the point which
were picked up by Hunter and flipped into
the net.
Clinton's sixth and seventh goals were
scored on instant replay goals as McCone
brought the puck up the left side, passed the
puck past the defence to Chipchase down the
right who fired identical shots high into the
near corner.
At this point in the game coaches Butch
Fleet and Greg Burns tried some line
changes which found hard -skating
defenceman Craig Caldwell playing as a for-
ward who skated the entire length of the ice,
bounced a puck off the goalie, and put his
own rebound in the net. Scott Jewitt then
' made a fine lead pass to Hunter at the Ted
line which led to a breakaway goal into the
top corner of the net, completing Hunter's
hat trick.
In the third period, McCone displayed a
fine bit of skating and took the puck from
centre ice and skated around the defence
and put it behind the goalie on a nice deke.
Clinton's final goal was scored by Clinton's
second borrowed Atom player, as Scott
Jewitt converted a Greg Taylor pass into a
good goal.
Unfortunately, the scoring did not end
here as Lucan skated the length of the ice
with less than a minute to play and spoiled
Chris Hoggartll's first chance at a shut out
this year. He had worked hard over the
three periods foiling a number of Lucan
breakaways and covering up well on loose
pucks in front of his net.
Clinton 5 Exeter 3
The "A" final matched Exeter who had
beaten Parkhill and Blyth in the eight -team
double knock -out. tournament with the Clin-
ton "A's".'Exeter opened the scoring in the
first minute by firing a hard shot at Darren
Stevenson in goal. Stevenson stopped the
shot but its force powered it past him across
the goal mouth.
Clinton tied the game a few mintites later
when Craig Caldwell fed a pass from the
blue line into the slot where Curtis McCone
notched another goal. The go-ahead goal
came on a pass by Gavin Hunter to center
Greg Taylor.
On Clinton's third goal Caldwell took the
puck out of his ownendaround behind the
Exeter net where he slid a pass in front to
Chris Johnson who passed across to Shawn
Chipchase who put it in. The first period
ended with Clinton leading 3-1.
The second period was a hard -skating 15
minutes which saw Exeter beat goalie Chris
Hoggarth who illad replaced Stevenson half
way through the period. Clinton 3-2.
The third period saw two tiring teams
engaged in an end to end contest which saw
a number of penalties including three
minutes which Clinton played two players
short. Aggressive penalty killing and a hot
Hoggarth in goal kept Exeter from tying the
score. McCone finally broke the dry spell
when he slid a weak shot under the screened
goalie.
Exeter was not to be deterred and took the
puck from the face-off and fired a shot past
a startled Hoggarth. Clinton's final goal saw
Chipchase deliver a pass to center ice where
Hunter skated around two defencemen and
potted an insurance marker. The final five
minutes of the game saw both Clinton and
Exeter goaltenders being well tested by
numerous shots and scrambles.
The Peewee A's next game will be the
third play-off game against Mitchell at 7:15
this Thursday in Clinton. The first two
games in this series ended regulation time
in ties. With Mitchell winning the first in
over time and the second remaining tied.
Mitchell leads the four point series 3 points
to 1.
