WINGHAM - The Clinton Atoms shutout
Wingham 2 - 0 to take the first game in the
best two out of three series on Saturday,
February 8 in Wingham. Derek Hoggarth
played another superb game in goal as he
earned his sixth shutout of the season.
Clinton 2 - Wingham 0
Clinton took a 1 - 0 lead with only nine
seconds left. in the first period. The play
started deep in the Clinton end as Scott
Rathwell carried the puck out of his own
end. Rathwell fed Danny Wildfong a pass at
centre and when Wildfong crossed the
Wingham blueline he fed an excellent pass
to Shawn Chipchase in the slot and without
any hesitation, Chipchase drilled the puck
behind a startled Winghan netminder. The
goal turned out to be the only goal Clinton
would need in a closely played game.
In the third period, Scott Rathwell scored
an insurance goal at 1:01 as he backhanded
the puck into an empty right corner. From
that point on Clinton was content to check to
preserve the shutout for Hoggarth.

Wingham took a 1 - 0 first period lead at
the 54 second mark as Ryan Dejell scored an
unassisted goal. Clinton's Chris Kennedy
tied the game at 1 -1 in the second period as
he took a goal -mouth pass from Mark Liver-
more at 3:01. Just 28 seconds later Wingham
grabbed the lead again as Ryan Dejell not-
ched his second goal of the game at 3:29.
From that point on Wingham seemed to
throw a blanket over the Clinton shooters as
they hung on for a hard-fought and well-
deserved victory.
The third and deciding game in this series
is this coming Monday night, February 17 at
6:50 p.m. Clinton's next game is this Satur-
day at 3:45 as they host Lucknow in conjunc-
tion with Clinton's Minor Hockey Day.
