White Cane Week celebrated
White Cane Week, Canada's national
education week on blindness and visual im-
pairment, is 40 -years -old this. year, and
Canadians everywhere are invited to join in
the celebration.
The week of special events and hands-on
demonstrations is jointly sponsored by the
two major Canadian orggy ations of and
for blind and visually imaired persons:
The Canadian National Institute for the
Blind, and the Canadian Council of the
Blind. Fifty CNIB offices and more than 90
CCB clubs will be involved.
"Both groups have the same goal during
White Cane Week," explains Euclid Herie,
the CNIB's Managing Director. "To give the
'public the 'facts on blindness."
"The CNIB has been providing rehabifh'ta----
tion training for blind and visually impaired
people since 1918. But we know that true
rehabilitation is more than just counselling
and learning new skills. The person needs te.
be integrated into society. The best way to
do that is to create an environment that will
accept blind and visually impaired persons
and in which they can feel comfortable, par-
ticipate fully and achieve equality.
"So, during White Cane' Week, we extend
a special invitation to the public to come out
and see how it's done."
The National President of the CCB, Rudi
D. Rempel, explains, "We in the CCB are
especially concerned about employment op-
portunities for our young members. Their
career choices are expanding all the time,
with new technology and better training, but
the bottom line is still whether or not the
employer has enough information and im-
agination to see the potential.
"We like to use White Cane Week to stir up
that imagination a little."
White Cane Week events begin across
Canada on February 2. '

public system. I have nothing but respect
for them.
"I am not saying we are better. I'm, say-
ing we are different. We are offering an
education with a difference."
There will have to be changes to the
physical structure at the school. Original
plans to locate a cafeteria on the mezzanine
floor above the, gym have been scrapped.
"But there will be a cafeteria," said
Bishop.
The school will also have an up-to-date
computer lab and a well-equipped science
lab. Family studies and other arts courses
will be offered but in the annex which has
yet to undergo renovations. Architectural

drawings have not yet been approved by the
school board.
The principal is also starting negotiations
with the Stratford YMCA which is a block
away from the school. -
He is just not sitting back waiting for the
students to come. Bishop is taking the
message of the new school out to the poten-
tial students and on Friday, Jan. 24 the
Grade 8 students in outlying areas that now
attend Catholic schools will be at St.
Michael's open house.
He doesn't want any pressure put on the
kids, though. It's their decision and he will
respect whatever choice they make, he said.
Now, it's just fighting a tradition of no
Catholic high school and Bishop expects to
make this new venture work.

of a new catch basin in his budget submis-
sions to council for 1986.
Council received a reply from the
Ministry. of Transportation and Com-
munications (MTC) regarding a request for
funding for a works building. The MTC
stated, because Bayfield is an "urban
municipality", it does not qualify for fun-
ding, nor does it qualify for funds to offset
maintenance costs involved in the upkeep of
the building.
At a recent planning meeting,. council
decided not to make an offer on the Smith
building (Turnbull Marine building)
stating: "repair and renovation do not make
the Smith property attractive."
A reply was received from the Town of
Goderich to a request by .village council
about the grants they received to complete
the improvements. at St. Christopher's
Beach..
Ken Hunter, the town's commissioner of
works, replied the improvements were done
through four government grants. Council re-
quested the information as it may be useful
