It is rotated to various locations around, the county, with the next course being planned for the end of February or early March in Seaforth. The course is five weeks in duration with a follow-up. Health Education Consultant Sheryl Gilbert says the course doesn't concen- trate on why a person wants to quit smok- ing (there are many individual reasons) but rather on the quitting itself. The smokers are taught self-awareness to learn what kind of smoker they are and then a strategy for quitting is planned. The smokers are asked to keep records of when they smoke, where they smoke and under what conditions in order to pin- point their particular habits and thus change them. Many tips and methods_for quitting are given, from using the buddy system to exercising and changing to a brand of cigarettes you don't like. Ex- smokers are sometimes brought in to speak as well. Sheryl says the Huron -Perth Lung Association also has a quit smoking pro- gram. So far, it has only been im- plemented in Perth County. It is a step-by- step program adhering to a rigid manual. Smoke Enders Smoke Enders Canada is a private com- pany which offers a six-week (two and a half hours per week) smoking cessation progrim in various locations coast to coast) All employees are graduates of the program which boasts a 92 per cent suc- cess rate. - "We are the oldest, largest and most successful smoking cessation program of • its kind world-wide," says Jennifer Fran- cisco, manager of ,operations for the com- pany which tips been in business since 1969. Francisco won't give out details about the program because she says "too little information is a bad thing" but anyone who is interested in finding out more is in- vited to call (416) 963-9042 collect. The cost of smoking high Treating smoking-related illnesses in 1978-79 alone racked up $1 billion in hospital care costs and , another $22 million in physical visits. And .as staggering as those figures are, they don't even consider the health hazards for non-smokers from se- cond hand smoke. Furthermore, one study concludes that the 27,500 Canadians who died in 1978-79 from smoking lost a total of $3 billion that they might otherwige have earned. Disabili- 47. Adding fire costs to the tally, this study put the consequences of tobacco use at $5 billion in 1978-79. Premature death Smokers get sick more often than non- smokers. Those who light up more than 25 cigarettes a day are at twice the risk of dy- ing between the ages of 35-65 as are non- smokers. It is estimated that in 1983-84 smoking will 'have caused 30,000 premature deaths in Canada. , 47.
