Victor Crich is honored •
By Elizabeth A. Kettlewell
Ornithologists, field naturalists, and
"every day" birders of Ontario (especially
Clintonians), will be delighted with a
magnificent new publication titled Birds of
Ontario by Dr. J. Murray Speirs. This book
was launched in December at Hart House,
University of Toronto, and is regarded as a
major publication.
Of special interest (and pride) to
residents of Clinton is the fact that of the 345
glorious bird photographs, 245 were taken
by a native - of Clinton, Victor Crich,
F.R.P.S., who was born in 1898 on Vinegar
Hill at the north end of Clinton. He was the
„ youngest son of Eliza Glazier Crich, and
Onslow Crich, Clinton'spoliceman.
Dr. Speirs new book is published in two
volumes; one of. photographs of birds, and
the other, detailed work foradvanced or-
nithologists. Dr. Speirs has had a lifetime in-
terest in birds, and between 1973 and 1979
published a series of six books titled Birds of
Ontario County which he personally resear-
ched, assisted by his students.. Di'- Speirs
completed undergraduate work in
mathematics and physics, and obtained
degrees in zoology, specializing in or-
nithology. For many years he taught at the
University of Toronto m the Zoology Depart-
ment. He is now retired, and continues his
research with his ornithologist wife Doris H.
Speirs.
Victor Crich received his public and
elementary school education in Clinton. He
served overseas in World War I, and was
decorated with the Military Cross for his
valour.
Following the war, he entered Queen's
University, Kingston, and graduated with a
specialists degree in biology and chemistry,
and later received a degree in art from the
Ontario College of Art. He also graduated
from the Ontario College .of Education and
taught in schools at Gore Bay, Tamworth,
St. Catharines and for 30 years at Northern
Secondary School, Toronto; retiring in 1964.
Until recently, he instructed in the night
school photography classes at this school.
For 20 years, he headed the photographic
section of the Banff School of Fine Arts,
from which he.retired in 1975. In his honor,
Crich Hall was built on the campus, serving
as the Photographic and Visual fom-
munications Building.
Mr. Crich is nationally and internationally
known for his excellence in , nature
photography, and has received numerous
-awards for outstanding pictures of birds,
animals and wildlife studies.
One-man exhibitions of Victor Crich's
photography have been shown at the Art
Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario
Miiseurrl, and the London Art Gallery. His
photographs have. been used to illustrate
many books, calendars and magazines.
Since his. retirement from teaching, Mr.
Crich has been taking sculpture lessons,
creating birds and animals in wood, and
soapstone.
The Birds of Ontario by Dr. J. Murray
Speirs, and illustrated by Victor Crich is
published by the Natural Heritage, Natural
History Inc. at P.O. Box 69, Postal Station
H, Toronto, M4C 5H7. An introduction to this
book has been written lay Canada's promi-
nent bird artist, Robert Bateman.

Burger scores video upset
The first annual Clinton Recreation Video
Tournament held during the holidays
featured some major upsets with a large
number of competitors showing their video
prowess.
The round-robin tournament produced
some fierce competition with Travis Lyndon
coming up short (for once) in his bid for the
title. Robbie "Burger" Marriage scored the
1
tournament's major upset by defeating
Jason Fleet 74,700 points to 13,800 points in
the "10 Yard Fight.,
Marriage had the title snatched from his
grasp by Richard Lyndon. However, the
quality of video players at the tournament
produced a five -way tie. Although Craig
Caldwell put up a good fight, Jason Fleet
ended up the overall winner.
