CLINTON - The Christmas break didn't
seem to help the Clinton Junior D Mustangs
get back on the winning track. This time, the
Mustangs lost weekend home games to divi-
sion rivals Seaforth and Mitchell on January
3 and 5.
e pair of losses gives the Mustangs a
Aline wins, 16 losses and three tie record
Which leaves them in fourth place, 22 points
behind north division leaders Seaforth.
Seaforth 5 Clinton 3
Despite a well-rounded effort, the
Mustangs fell victim to a strong Seaforth
team, losing 5-3. Clinton opened the scoring
at the 15:47 markof the first period. Wayne
Smith scored with assists going to Randy
Marriage and Travis Lyndon. Late in the
period, Seaforth tied the score at 1-1.
The second period was all Seaforth as they
scored three goals to break into a 4-1 lead. In
thethird period, Clinton scored at the 16:30
mark on an unassisted goal by Bob Ladd to
pull within two. With just under two minutes
left: in the game, Clinton made the score 4-3
on a goal by newcomer Derek Jefferson.
Assists ,on the goal went to Bob Ladd and
Bob Dupee. However, the Centennaires,
with 27 seconds left to play, scored an in-
surance goal to ice -the win.
Clinton goaltender Chris; Ladd had a busy
time in the nets, facing 44 shots compared to
28 shots for the Seaforth goaltender.
The Mustangs used five new players in the
game to "strengthen the team," says
Mustangs manager Bryan Marriage. Added
to the line up were, Derek Jefferson, Chris
White and goaltender Jeff Roy from the
Clinton Bantams; Byron Boyce from the
Clinton Midgets and Sean . Schaeffer, im-
ported from the Lucan Junior D team.
"We've been losing a lot of close ones and
we'll need these guys to make a run for the
playoff," said Marriage, adding that in the
Past week he has signed two more players
including Bob Snell, a 19 -year-old from the
Bayfield Recreation League.
Mitchell 3 Clinton 0
In a game with the Mitchell Hawks, now
just three points back of the Mustangs, the
Mustangs came out empty handed in the 3-0
loss in Clinton on January 5.
Injuries played a role in the game, with
Clinton playing the last. two Aeriatls with on-
ly 10 men on the bench, said Marriage.
Athough they . lost the last two games,
Marriage said the team played well in both
games. However, the remaining games in
the schedule will be crucial in order for the
Mustangs to hang on to the last playoff spot.
"We're still in fourth which is the final
playoff spot. We have to keep beating Mit-
chell. We have two games left with Mitchell
and four games with Howick so these are six
critical games.
ThOur last 10 games will tell the tale
because the bottom three teams play each
other a lot," he said.
The Mustangs will play a game in
Thamesford on January 10 before returning
home to play Seaforth on January 12.

Clinton opened the scoring in the first
period as Shaun Chipchase scored an
unassisted goal at 1:44 to give Clinton their
a only goal of the game. Thamesford tied it up
1-1 in the second period at 7:41.
The winning goal for Thamesford was
scored by Mark Woods at 2:56 of the third
period from a wild scramble in front of the
Clinton net. Derek Hoggarth, who played
another strong game for Clinton in goal, had
no chance as he was down and out of the
play when the puck slid into the open side.
The Clinton Atoms travelled, to Exeter to
participate in their second annual Petro
Canada Atom hockey tournament on
December 27.

aided by an empty net goal, defeated Clinton
3-1.

as he scored on a rebound off the stick of
Mark Livermore. Scott Rathwell also earn-
