Half of drivers killed were drunk
Half of the Ontario drivers and
pedestrians who die as aesult of traffic ac-
cidents are drwik according to a study
released by Health and Welfare Minister
Jake Epp.
" Results of the study of blood samples
WI= frown fatally injured Ontario drivers
and pedestrians between March 1, 1982 and
July 31, 1984 show that half of the drivers
killed (49.7 per cent) had alcohol levels in
excess of -the legal limit forirripaifinent (80
milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of
blood).
Nearly 11 per cent of the drivers had THC,
a derivative of cannabis (marijuana or
hashish), in their blood. Most (Le. 83 per
cent) of the cannabis users also had alcohol
in their blood, two-thirds of them over the
legal limit.
"These findings are of grave concern to us
all," Mr. Epp said. "People are continuing
to drink and drive, to take drugs and drive.
They are killing not only themselves but
other, innocent people on our streets and
highways.
"I strongly urge drivers of all ages to
VARNA - Stanley Township's Ses-
quicentennial got off to a good start when a
capacity crowd gathered to celebrate at the
complex on New Year's Day. Quite a
number of people were dressed in fashions
of years gone by. Reeve Clarence Rau and
his wife Sharon greeted guests at the door.
Floyd McAsh, Julie Webster and Ken Rau
entertained with piano music as the crowd
assembled.
Clerk treasurer Mel Graham made brief
opening remarks and introduced the pro-
gram numbers. Leona McBride performed
several trumpet numbers, accompanied by
Marjorie Hayter at the piano.
The-Valrpa Singers sang several pieces in
tipping, with the holiday season. The
'talente Johnson.arnily of Stratford enter=
twined with fiddle music•step and clog danc-'
Mg, and recitations. Four-year-old Matthew
was a big hit, playing fiddle and keeping in
step through the many dances - a terrific
achievement for such •a little fellow.
Refreshments ( compliments of the
Tuckersmith Municipal Telephone Com-
pany), pop, cheese and fruit was available
as well as coffee and a big cake.
Gordon Hill, chairman of the Steering
Committee, was in charge of the Early Bird
Draw for $500 , which wound up the
festivities. He prolonged the. excitement
with a fast -talking tongue -twister story of
the Foot Brothers. The lucky draw winner
was Nora Heard of Bayfield. Her ticket

The report also suggests that a higher prow

The study found that 17 per cent of fatally
injured young drivers ageii 14 to 24 years

to 8 per cent of this age group five years
earlier. Among the drivers 25 years of age
or older, six per cent showed signs of can-
