Mel, then 41, came into O.A. 50 pounds overweight. He explains how the program works for him: "After accepting the concepts and priciples of O.A., I was able to lose the 50 pounds in a matter of five or six months, without ever going on any regimented or fad diets," he says. "I learned to eat normally — to eat three meals a day with nothing in between. Basically, I've maintained that weight loss for the last two years. That is something I never could have done before, by dieting alone or with diet clubs." Because O.A. is a fellowship, rather than a diet club, there are no dues, fees or weigh -ins. The only requirement is "a desire to stop eating compulsively." The first and most important step is to walk into a meeting, admitting your powerlessness to control your eating. Subsequent steps deal with hope, faith, courage, integrity, willingness, humility,. brotherly love, discipline, perseverance, spirituality and active participation in the program. Riva walked through the doors of Q.A. new to Toronto, .had few friends in the city and, felt an overwhelming loneliness, In the previous 10 months since her arrival in. Toronto, she had put on, 25 pounds. At 5'2"; being ' almost 150 pounds was a burden. "I was totally unhappy," says Riva. "I, felt unsettled.. My life was going nowhere in a hurry and.I had to to cope with a major weight gain as well. "My first impression of O.A.? Well, I wanted what everyone else had — that sense of belonging. The constructive things that people were doing with their lives was amazing. "My main concern was that 1 am basically very lazy. I could never diet for more than a day. Actually, I never got through even one day dieting. "A doctor had told me I could potentially get quite heavy according to my build and and put' me on diet pills. After flying around the office -for a few days and almost losing my job, I stopped taking those pills. "As far as diet clubs are concerned, 1 went to one . meeting and they started to talk about calories and food measuring. Well, 1 rwasn't about to get involved in something as complicated (for me) as that. I know myself. I get all excited about a project and then soon after, 1 drop out. 'I admit I've been in and out of the O.A. program, but 1 know it's the answer. "That's why for me, it's a pleasure. I don't have to concern myself with calories or any of that technical jargon. The first thing that I was asked to do was to be honest with myself and identify my binge foods. "Well, I am a junk -food junkie. Until O.A. I lived only on frozen, canned or restaurant foods. 1 learned how to cook and what a nutritionally balanced meal consists of. "Best of all, I am happier, for the most part, than I've ever been: I have lost over 20 pounds, made friends with some very special people and more important, I've begun to accept myself." Riva's story is typical of most people who join the program. A low sense of self-esteem plus a food compulsion make for a miserable existence. The single most important benefit of the program is the relief that one is not alone with the problem. There are O.A. meetines across Canada and around the world.
