His answer was always
"Anything." Of course. she was
not able to cook, just
ettA1lio8."
The same principle applies
liti.day when it comes to the
**endow. For example:
."What can you do? Type?
Take :dictation? Use a word
processor or a dictation
machine?"
"Nothing, but I'm willing to
take anything."
The interviewer is not able to
offer "anything."
An important point to
remember when going for an
interview is to have something
to offer. Your skills, personality
and appearance, your
educational background, your
work record and your character
and attitudes are what you
present.
However, if you do not have
a work record, try to have a skill
or proof of training in some field
to bring with you.
Your interview is likely to
follow a three-part pattern. First
a rapport is established between
the interviewer and you; second,
you are given information about
the job for which you are
applying and often about
company policies and rules and
third, you are asked certain
questions about yourself and
your work.
Here is something to note.
Remember why you think you
are qualified for the job for
'which you have applied.
Recently a friend approached
me, looking worried. Her
daughter was about to go for an
interview for a government job.
She had won.first prize in her
commercial class for highest
•marks. Should she tell the
interviewer? Or would she sound
too conceited?
But of course'she should tell
her. If her skills are that good,
she must mention themto spite
of the fact that she will be tested
for typing, shorthand and/or
bookkeeping, or whatever the job
entails. Often, the test comes
before the interview. •
In0nY• case, Whatever you
have to offer in the way of
certificate, prize, letter of
recommendation or resume, be
sure to present it. It could tip the
scales in your favor should the
job selection boil down to you
and one other applicant.
Now, are you ready for your
interview? Nervous? Take a
deep breath before entering the
personnel office and keep in
mind that your interviewer
specializes in putting people at
their ease. You have dressed for
the occasion, meaning that jeans
may be acceptable around your
home in the morning, but have
no place in an office.
While yOur interviewer
explains company policy and the
nature of the job you have
applied for, listen. You could be
gaining a valuable insight into
your future career.
Do a little research on the
company you plan to approach.
Don't make more than two
appointments per day because
you don't know how long each
interview will take.
What's more, you can prepare
in advance for questions you
may be asked about your work.
Here are a few sample questions
which apply to a variety of jobs,
from executive secretary to
librarian, management trainee or
whatever.
• "I notice by your resume
that you have not stayed in any
one job very long. There is
probably a reason for this. Can
you explain?"
• "Tell me a little about your
last job. What part of it did you
like the least, and why'?"

one and has been known to
catch many an applicant off
guard. Think about it and have a
sensible, honest answer ready.
A college graduate came to
me recently, asking what 1
thought was important about an
interview.
Aside from the necessity of
having something to offer in the
way of training or of an office
skill. I thought of two points
that I apply to most of life's
challenges. They also relate to
the interview:
One is the importance of
being persistent. In some
respects, landing a job is like
making a sale. In order to make
50 sales each month, you
contact, say, 300 people.
Similarly, in order to land that
special job, you may have to sit
through 150 interviews. In other
words, never say ncver.
• The other point relates to
discipline. Whatever your work,
if you like what you're doing,
you will do a better -job.
However, this is not always
possible. The occasion arises
when we have to take work, any
work available. That is where
disciplitte comes in.
Besides, if you are lucky
enough to be doing the work
you have dreamed of, discipline
is still required in keeping
regular hours and maintaining
correct work habits. s
