Don't Drink and drive In Canada, there is a large number of young people kill- ed and injured in highway col- lisions. About 1,500 Canadian teenagers die each year in traffic crashes - the number one killer of young people to- day. According to official police reports, the most dangerous time frame for traffic fatalities is between 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. During this Safe Driving Week, the Canada Safety Council encourages young people to take extra precau- tions when driving. Remember, don't drink and drive, wear your seat belt and drive defensively. Infis way you will save thousands of lives that otherwise would be lost as a result of motor vehi- cle collisions. Traffic crashes are a preventable waste of life, health and money. "Young Canadians Are Responsible Drivers. Help Us Prove It!" This is the theme of the Canada Safety Coun- cil's 30th Annual Safe Driving Week. Drivers age 25 and under are involved in more traffic crashes causing death, serious injury and property damage than any other age group of Canadians. What is the problem? The Council says, "Young drivers colli- sions receive only short term attention. The collective con- cerns of all groups - govern- ments, educational system, society, parents, police and other interest groups - are not co-ordinated. Only a few see the problem warranting a high priority." Why the Problem? Young drivers are often inexperienc- ed (adolescence), lack good judgement, often drink and drive, are willing to take risks, and exhibit feelings of aggression and alienation while driving. What might be done about the problem.? The major emphasis must include parental supervision combined with mandatory safety education programs prior to reaching driver licen- sing.age. A driver licensing system., incorporating a graduated drivers permit with heavy financial penalties and license suspensions for non-compliance, universal alcohol and drug control policies and procedures, special insurance schemes with incentives for safe driv- ing and school based pro- grams, such as Students Against Drunk Drivers, must be implemented and co- ordinated on a National level. Yes, young Canadians can be responsible drivers. We must all work together to pro- ve it! Support the 30th Annual Safe Driving Week, get in- volved, and help Canada's youth.
