HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1985-12-11, Page 16Page 16—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11,1985 Christmas pageant held at United Church HENSALL - The annual White Gift service and Christmas pageant was well received by a packed congregation on Sunday morn- ing at the Hensall United Church. The pageant, written and produced by the Sun- day church school staff, was based on the current Mission Study within the church on the Canadian Indian. The junior choir did an excellent job off leading the ministry of music throughout the service. Along with the familiar Christmas carols they sang the very spirited, "At Christmas Time; ; , "Jesus Is His Name", and as the angels appeared, "Alleluia, Hear the Angels Sing". Also sung were the very beautiful Bethlehem Lullaby entitled, "Once There Was A Little Town", and the very interesting "Christmas Ques- tions", which had the senior part of the J junior choir ask the question and the junior section came in with the answer. As the children presented their gifts, the choir sang, "0 -Come Little Children", to the traditional tune. Throughout the pageant, the Huron Indian Carol was used. This carol was used as the basis for the pageant and is the first Cana- dian carol ever written. It was taught to the Huron Indians over 300 years ago by Father Jean de Brebeuf who was one of the group of Jesuit missionaries who worked in the Georgian Bay area of Ontario. Solos for the service were by Mary Taylor, Mindy Bell and Kerri-Sue Kyle sing- ing "Still The Night." Playing the part of Mary and Joseph were Angela Bell and Shane Pepper. The readers for the service were Diane Stebbins and Tim Brock with Bevan Moir as the nar- rator. Belva Fuss was the pianist for the service. During one of the manger scenes, the primary department, dressed in authentic costumes sang the very beautiful Iroquois Lullaby, "Ho, Ho, Watanay, Ki-yo-ke-na." The ushers for the service were Pam Gackstetter, Elizabeth Thompson, Wayne Scotchmer, Gordon Hamilton and Chris Campbell, assisted by the senior ushers Sherry Dayman, Pauline Bell, Troyann Cole and Starr Jesney, Lorna Spencer greeted the congregation. The church sanctuary was decorated with a birch bark -evergreen lodge with the points covered with the new fallen snow, along with the animals of the woods: foxes, beavers, squirrels, rabbits, owls and other birds. The shepherds were situated on an off-stage which was transformed into evergreen hills where they were hunting. Cecil Pepper, Steve Corbett and Glen Hayter were in charge of the stage and pro- perties. The remaining decorating was look- ed after by Joanne Rowcliffe, assisted by Tammy Preszcator, Beth McGee, Pat Campbell, Pam Mallette and Judy Kyle. In charge of the costumes were Elaine Corbett assisted by Joan Corbett, Jean Jacobe, Gail Reid, Sharon Kyle and Tim O'Brien. Janis Bisback was in charge of the makeup. Much appreciation , goes to the church school staff and children of the congregation for this tremendous presentation of the Christmas story. It will be long remembered by those present. Next Sunday will be the celebration of the third Sunday of Advent with special music by both the senior and junior choirs. Students at the Clinton and District Christian School had the opportunity to dress like their favorite storybook character on December 6. ( Anne Narejko photo.) worshipping God is UCW theme By Velma Robinson HENSALL - "Let Us Worship God" was the theme of the December meeting of Unit 3 of the Hensall Uniterd Church. President Dorothy Parker presided over the meeting. The worship was conducted by Dorothy Brintnell. Christmas carols were sung and Sarah Dick read the new program for 1986. Mary Brintnell reported on the friendship card and Marg Cole on the bazaar. Rev. McDonald spoke on "Some of the things we miss at Christmas time". For the study, Helen Roberts gave a reading. Dorothy Parker thanked everyone for taking part and helping out through the past year. Rev. McDonald closed the meeting with prayer. After lunch; The Secret Pals exchanged Christmas gifts. Hostesses were Marg Cole, Mary Brintnell and Mary Kinsman. Rebekahs enjoy supper Members of Arnber Rebekah Lodge No. 349 met last Wednesday and enjoyed a turkey supper prior to their meeting. Vice,Grand Sister Lois Jones presided for the meeting, assisted by Vice Grand Sister Bonnie Upshall. Past D.D.P. Sister Ruby Bell installed Sister Sharon Love as Chaplain. It was decided to dispense with the first meeting in January. As it would fall on New Year's Day. "Happy Birthday" was sung II o several sisters who had birthdays during.the past month. Following the meeting, a social hour was enjoyed. Unit 4 Unit 4 of the, Hensall United Church Women opened their Christmas meeting with carol singing. Nan `Britton read a Christmas poem, Hazel Luther led the devotion. Mary Roobal reported on the number of cards sent during the year. Myrtle Sherritt, the treasurer, reported a successful year. Offering was received by Hilda Payne and dedicated by Nan Britton. Eileen Rannie, Evelyn Flynn, Hilda Payne, Mabel Park and Mabel Shirray volunteered to work at dinner preparation's for the Co-op Dinner on December 13. Shirley. Luther, Mabel park and Sadie Hoy are to make pies. Nan Britton thanked Myrtle Sherritt for 25 . years service as treasurer for Unit 4. Elva. Forrest presented Myrtle with a gift. Shirley Luther told the Christmas story from the perspective of the Angels in Heaven. Shirley Luther and Nan Britton, in keeping with Shirley's meditation, sang a duet. Mary Roobal requested members to bring new Christmas cards to the January •meeting. Nan Britton closed•with prayer. Evelyn Flynn and Mabel Park served tea with Christmas cake and cookies. The slate of officers for 1986 is: Leaders - Nan Britton and Elva Forrest; Secretaries - Sadie Hoy and Rena Caldwell; Treasurer - Elva Forrest and Nellie Riley; Pianist - Dorothy Mickle and Mabel Shirray; Social Functgions - Mabel Park and Evelyn Flynn and Card Convenor L Mary Roobal. General meeting The annual general meeting of the Hensall United Church Women was held December 3. President Belva Fuss opened the meeting with a poem. Helen Drysdale took "Hope" as her theme for the devotional. The loose offering for the evening for Mexican Relief was to be made up; $200. A pictureof the church in memory of former U:C.W. members, was presented and hung in the Fellowship Hall. Hilda Payne presented the Financial Statement and the Budget for 1986. It was decided to give to over and above for missions; to carpet the entrance and steps in the church, Proceeds from the bazaar are to be donated to Organ Fund. Donations were made to: Resource Centre; Alma College; Five Oaks; Camp Menesetung; World Outreach; Messengers; Explorers; C.G.I.T.; Scouts; Beavers; Venturers; Family and Children Services; Town and Country Homemakers; Mission Services, London; Huron Day Centre for Home Bound; and Alcohol and Drug Concerns. It was reported, a bale was packed for Mission Services. A donation was made to the Mission; An Adopted Child; and,: Friendship House. Cookies and candy were brought in for Shut-in Boxes. The slate of offices presented by Dianne Gerstenkorn and elected are: Past President, Joyce Pepper; President, Belva Fuss; Secretary, Grace Drummond; Treasurer, Hilda Payne; Stewardship and Finance, Dianne Gerstenkorn; Communications, Dorothy Brintnell; World Outreach; Kay Mock; Christian and Leadership Development; Shirley McAllister; In Church, Marg Cole; Church in Society, Audrey Christie; Unit 2• Mona Alderdice; Unit 3, Margaret Upshall; Unit 4, Nan Britton; Card Convenor, Mary Kinsman; Nominations, Joyce Pepper; Manse Reps, Belva Fuss and Mary Brintnell. Audrey Christie and Audrey Joynt were in charge of the program. They showed a Christmas film. Belva led in singing carols. A social time followed, led by Unit 2. Youth For Christ South Huron Youth For Christ held their December rally Saturday, night, in Brucefield School. Director Ron Westlake was in charge. He opened the rally by singing several Christmas carols and led in opening prayer. Quizzing then took place with five teams 'ram topage 17
