Atoms
HANOVER - The Clinton Atoms captured
the B championship at the Hanover Barons'
Atom Tournmament this past weekend,
defeating Georgetown in the finals on Shawn
Chipchase's two overtime goals. After
losing the first game, the Atoms bounced
back to take the B title by winning their next
three games against Kitchener, Durham
and Georgetown.
Kincardine 3 - Clinton 2
In the first game of the tournament,
Kincardine nipped Clinton 3-2. Jason Carter
opened the scoring for Clinton in the first
period with the game only 19 seconds old as
he took a long lead pass from Shawn
Chipchase to score. About a minute later,
Tim McKay from Kincardine scored to even
the score at 1-1. Before the period ended,
Mark Livermore gave Clinton a 2-1 lead as
he was set up beautifully in the slot area by
Scott Rathwell. Scott Shaddick also drew an
assist on the play as he passed to Rathwell to
start the play.
Kincardine scored the only goals in the
second period as Shawn Gates and Scott
Haller beat Clinton goaltender Derek
Hoggarth.
The third period was scoreless, although
Clinton had numerous chances to tie the
game. The best one came with just over a
minute left in the game when Shawn
Chipchase was robbed on a breakaway.
Clinton's Jason Carter was named the MVP
of the game for his fine efforts.
Clinton 4 - Kitchener 0
In the second game -of the tournament,
Derek Hoggarth earned the shutout as he
blanked Kitchener 4-0 with a strong effort
Hanover tau
between the pipes. The Clinton played a
strong checking game to help Derek earn his
second shutout of the season.
In the first period at the 1:55 mark, Danny
Wildfong provided Clinton with the only goal
they really needed as his wrist shot found
the open corner. Linemates Chris Kennedy
and Mark Livermore earned the assists.
Mark Livermore was left unprotected in
front of the Kitchener net in the second
period and he easily deflected Danny
Wildfong's pass from the corner into the net.
Before the second period ended, Shawn
Chipchase picked up two insurance markers
for Clinton. On the first Chipchase goal Scott
Rathwell earned the assist and on the
second goal Jason Carter and Scott Jewitt
assisted. In this game, Scott Jewitt won the
MVP award.
Clinton 1- Durham 0
In the third game of the tourney, Clinton
was pitted against their old arch -rivals from
Durham who they defeated last spring to
capture the WOAA championship.
It was the same kind of game each team
provided last year - excellent goaltending
and tight forechecking. But, it was Clinton
.who prevailed when Jason Carter scored
with four minutes remaining in regulation
time on a rebound from a shot by Shawn
Chipchase. Hard-working defenceman Scott
Wright started the play deep in his own end
when he sent Chipchase in on net with a long
lead pass. Derek Hoggarth made several
key saves to chalk up his second shutout of
the tournament. Shawn Chipchase was
named the MVP of the game.

Clinton 5 - Georgetown 3
In the championship game, Clinton was
matched against Georgetown, 'a team far
superior in size. It was, however, hard work
and determination by the Clinton squad
which produced a 5-3 victory.
There was no scoring in the first period as
both teams concentrated on defence. The
play opened up in the second period and at
the 32 second mark Jason Carter, with some
strong checking, stole the puck, skated in
and sent a beautiful wrist shot into the upper
right hand corner to give Clinton a 1-0 lead.
Late in the period with 52 second remaining,
Jason Carter set up Shawn Chipchase for
Clinton's second goal.
In the third, Clinton was determined to
secure the win early as Jason Carter scored
his second goal of the game with eight
seconds gone in the period. Shawn
Chipchase earned the assist. But, Clinton
suffered a lapse and it cost them dearly as
Georgetown scored three straight goals to
tie the game 3-3 at the mid -point of the
period.
The score remained tied for the rest of the
period and for most of the overtime period. •
But, with less than a minute left to play in
overtime, Shawn Chipchase scored two big
goals to give Clinton the championship.
Scott Wright assisted on the first overtime
goal.
Scott Rathwell was namecjClinton's MVP
for the game. Derek Hoggarth, who once
again turned in an excellent performance,
was named the tournament's outstanding
goaltender.
