(AlailRivett photo) Atoms HANOVER - The Clinton Atoms captured the B championship at the Hanover Barons' Atom Tournmament this past weekend, defeating Georgetown in the finals on Shawn Chipchase's two overtime goals. After losing the first game, the Atoms bounced back to take the B title by winning their next three games against Kitchener, Durham and Georgetown. Kincardine 3 - Clinton 2 In the first game of the tournament, Kincardine nipped Clinton 3-2. Jason Carter opened the scoring for Clinton in the first period with the game only 19 seconds old as he took a long lead pass from Shawn Chipchase to score. About a minute later, Tim McKay from Kincardine scored to even the score at 1-1. Before the period ended, Mark Livermore gave Clinton a 2-1 lead as he was set up beautifully in the slot area by Scott Rathwell. Scott Shaddick also drew an assist on the play as he passed to Rathwell to start the play. Kincardine scored the only goals in the second period as Shawn Gates and Scott Haller beat Clinton goaltender Derek Hoggarth. The third period was scoreless, although Clinton had numerous chances to tie the game. The best one came with just over a minute left in the game when Shawn Chipchase was robbed on a breakaway. Clinton's Jason Carter was named the MVP of the game for his fine efforts. Clinton 4 - Kitchener 0 In the second game -of the tournament, Derek Hoggarth earned the shutout as he blanked Kitchener 4-0 with a strong effort Hanover tau between the pipes. The Clinton played a strong checking game to help Derek earn his second shutout of the season. In the first period at the 1:55 mark, Danny Wildfong provided Clinton with the only goal they really needed as his wrist shot found the open corner. Linemates Chris Kennedy and Mark Livermore earned the assists. Mark Livermore was left unprotected in front of the Kitchener net in the second period and he easily deflected Danny Wildfong's pass from the corner into the net. Before the second period ended, Shawn Chipchase picked up two insurance markers for Clinton. On the first Chipchase goal Scott Rathwell earned the assist and on the second goal Jason Carter and Scott Jewitt assisted. In this game, Scott Jewitt won the MVP award. Clinton 1- Durham 0 In the third game of the tourney, Clinton was pitted against their old arch -rivals from Durham who they defeated last spring to capture the WOAA championship. It was the same kind of game each team provided last year - excellent goaltending and tight forechecking. But, it was Clinton .who prevailed when Jason Carter scored with four minutes remaining in regulation time on a rebound from a shot by Shawn Chipchase. Hard-working defenceman Scott Wright started the play deep in his own end when he sent Chipchase in on net with a long lead pass. Derek Hoggarth made several key saves to chalk up his second shutout of the tournament. Shawn Chipchase was named the MVP of the game. ament Clinton 5 - Georgetown 3 In the championship game, Clinton was matched against Georgetown, 'a team far superior in size. It was, however, hard work and determination by the Clinton squad which produced a 5-3 victory. There was no scoring in the first period as both teams concentrated on defence. The play opened up in the second period and at the 32 second mark Jason Carter, with some strong checking, stole the puck, skated in and sent a beautiful wrist shot into the upper right hand corner to give Clinton a 1-0 lead. Late in the period with 52 second remaining, Jason Carter set up Shawn Chipchase for Clinton's second goal. In the third, Clinton was determined to secure the win early as Jason Carter scored his second goal of the game with eight seconds gone in the period. Shawn Chipchase earned the assist. But, Clinton suffered a lapse and it cost them dearly as Georgetown scored three straight goals to tie the game 3-3 at the mid -point of the period. The score remained tied for the rest of the period and for most of the overtime period. • But, with less than a minute left to play in overtime, Shawn Chipchase scored two big goals to give Clinton the championship. Scott Wright assisted on the first overtime goal. Scott Rathwell was namecjClinton's MVP for the game. Derek Hoggarth, who once again turned in an excellent performance, was named the tournament's outstanding goaltender. Skating club announces new executive CLINTON - Thefigure skating club's season is now underway with an enthusiastic response. By all indications, it should be another successful year. . Recently, the new executive for the figure skating club were elected. Arlyone interested is welcome to attend. The Ways and Means Committee appreciate the support they received form the public during their fund raising efforts' which have included cheese sales, pocket calender and five year skating memories book. Special mention should also be made of the top cheese seller, Loi Powell, who sold $470 worth of cheese. The Precision Team Committee reported a donation from the Kinette Club.. The committee also received ' news of the Optimist Club agreeing to sponsor the Precison members with the purchase of warm-up suits. Some dates to ' remember are the club competition on January 19 and March 21 is the date of the club carnival. The members will be selling advanced tickets for this event. A number of club members attended the Amateur Coaches Clinic in Mitchell recently. Those who participated were: Lisa Beattie Sherri Preszcator, Julie Rutledge and Robyn Hicks. Attending the Skaters Development Seminar in St. Marys were: Jody Merner, Jackie Draper, Shelley Hayter and Sherri Howson. Club members in the junior and intermediate divisions took tests in the CanSkate and Can Figure Skate 'levels. Passing the tests were: Beginners- Michelle Van Loo, Krista Van Dyk, Mandy Hadenko and Jared Carnahan. Elementary? Emily Parr and Jason Lobb. Basic- Darla Watson, Vicki Carter and Julie Bell. Even with, the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season apprbaching, some curlers have already participated in bonspiels and competitions: In the latter part of November, a rink of Bert Barker, Ken Rogerson, Claire Cox and Alex Townsend travelled to London and participated in the Molson's Bonspiel. The first day they won a game and lost a game. The second day Ann Adams was replaced by Judy Hall and they again won one and lost one. A mixed team of Gayle and John Brownridge and Eileen and Alex Townsend journeyed to Markdale to compete in the OCA Seagrams Five -Star Mixed Competition on December 7. According to a spokesman: "We worked extremely hard, weren't too successful, but had a good day." • Also on December 7, a team was entered in the Men's Open Bonspiel in Walkerton. The team consisted of Mark Cantelon, Bill Gibson, Brian Falconer and Del Mitchehnore. The team won first place and brought home the trophy. Other club members participated in the Fun Night which was hosted by the Bayfield Curling Club. A good time was enjoyed by all who were present.
