Council -holds inaugural meting
By Alma Rivett
BAYFIELD - Although the severely cold
and snowy weather limited attendence, the
Bayfield Council's inaugural meeting was
held with 12 members of the public turning
out on December 2 to meet the new council
and witness the swearing-in ceremonies.
Rev. George Youmatoff presided over the
inauguration with clerk Pat Graham of-
ficially swearing in Reeve Dave Johnston
and four councillors Cliff Freeman, Lloyd
Huffman, Helen Owen and Jim Quick who
will be responsible for the village's business
for the next three years. The meeting was
adjourned for a short period for a social -
time with Christmas cake and coffee being
served.
Reeve Johnston said he hoped the weather
would have co-operated, permitting more
people from the village to attend the in-
augural meeting.
"There were a lot of people who indicated
they would be at the meeting, but with the
bad weather, it meant they couldn't come, "
he said.
At the meeting, the public was also in-
troduced to the department heads of the
village and the members of the 12 commit-
tees of council were announced. Serving as
department heads are: Clerk -Treasurer and
Marina Co-ordinator, Pat Graham; Com-
munity Centre Manager and Recreation
Director, John Graham; Chief Building Of-
ficial, Herman VanWieren; Road
Superintendent, Rick Penhale; Fire Chief,
Don Warner; Harbour Master, Tom Castle.
and Laborer, Stephen Telford.
In other business, council, prompted by a
request from clerk Pat Graham, passed a
resolution which would prohibit approval of
a building permit before the payment is
received.
The bylaw, said Reeve Johnston, was
passed because a few individuals who had
requested a building permit were reluctant
to pay the fee after the permit had been ap-
proved. Currently, the rate structure is $4
per thousand dollars which takes into ac-
count the labor and materials needed to
build a house.
Council also received a letter from the
Huron Perth Separate School asking council

tip support a resolution calling for the At- Planning
tprney General of Ontario to alter legisla-
tion which would reduce excessive law suits
and court awards causing increases in in-
surance premiums.
Besides passing the school board's resolu-
tion, council instructed clerk Graham to
write a resolution stating, in effect, that
many municipalities will be unable to afford
the huge increases in the cost of liability in-
surance. The resolution will be sent to other
municipalities in Ontario urging them to
support Bayfield's recommendation.
In the case of Bayfield, Reeve Johnston
said the village can anticipate a significant
increase in liability insurance costs, if in
fact it can be placed, when the policy comes
due.
Under new business, the clerk was in-
structed to tender fuel oil and garbage col-
lection for the village.

EverYungs enjoy party
BAYFIELD - The Ever Young Senior
Citizen group enjoyed their yearly
Christmas dinner party, held in St. An-
drew's Church Hall. The room was very at-
tractively decorated for the season with
really enprmous poinsettia plants, a
Christmas tree all a -twinkle with miniature
lights and on the long tables, lighted
candles.
Thirty-eight members and guests sat
down to enjoy a traditional turkey dinner.
The special course was undoubtedly the
dessert, a variety of which were offered by
the ladies from which you could make a
choice. The caterers must have been think-

The Preident Jean Lindsey most graciou-
sly welcomed the group and following the
dinner, introduced Ethel and LeRoy Poth,
who had kindly brought splendid slides of
their trip, with Gwen Pemberton, to New
Zealand. Ethel's commentary is most in-
teresting. She Lias an eye for the unusual
detail. It was such a pleasant evening, clos-

Merry Christmas to all.
New Residents
Another of our long time summer resident
families, has joined our village as year
round members of the community.
The Rev. Gordon and Melissa Kurtz arriv-
ed this week and will be living in their new
home on Tuyll Street. It was interesting to
see a whole house, placed in position in one
afternoon. Cordon and Melissa have taken
part in village activities over the.years, so
they will have no difficulty adjusting to their
new life in Bayfield.
Their many friends welcome them most
warmly.
