Duff's United Church Women hold Christmas meeting

WALTON-Twenty ladies attended the
Christmas meeting of the United Church
Women of Duff's United Church last
Wednesday evening.
The basement was decorated for the
Christmas theme with tables set with green
and red for the potluck supper that preceed-
ed the general meeting. Bonnie Lamble said
grace.
Edith Wey made a cake for Annie Reid, a
candle was lit and Happy Birthday was sung
to Annie to celebrate her birthday of
December 2.
Walton 2 unit was in charge of devotion.
Marilyn McDonald opened with a Christmas
message. Christmas hymns were sung with
Matie McGavin as the pianist. Karen Hoegy
and Pearl McCallum read scriptures,
followed with prayer.
Several numbers of special Christmas
music was supplied by Glorja Wilbee.
Margery Ritchie read a poem and Helen
Craig assisted Marilyn McDonald in a
eading. Helen Williamson and Margaret
111111rCraig also took part.
The Lamble girls Liz, Barb and Sarah,
sang, accompanied by their mother, Bonnie
at the piano. The offering was received and
dedicated. A classic Christmas story was
presented by Marilyn McDonald.
Viola Kirkby led in a short inspiration ser-
vice for the outgoing officers and incoming
officers, each lighting a candle.
Helen Craig presided for the business,
opening with .a reading. Minutes of an ex-
ecutive meeting in November was read by
Marilyn McDonald. Leona McDonald gave
the treasurer's report.
A new cleaping list is to be made up by the
new unit leaders. Heather McGavin and
Donna Godkin will attend Loe Alpha in
Toronto.
Many upcoming dates were announced.
The Candlelight service is to be held
Christmas Eve. The general meeting for the
New Year is to be the following week,
January 7 at 1:30 p.m. January 27 is the
Presbyterial meeting in Exeter.
Marion Godkin reported on the budget
meeting, the figures suggested for the 1986
U.C.W. Edith Wey read a letter from Seeds
for Zaire.
Helen Craig thanked all for their support
and help through the very busy year. She
then called on Marion Godkin who express-
ed her thanks to Helen for her leadership for
the past two years. The new President clos-
ed the meeting with prayer.

Celebrates Communion
The Rev. Cheryl -Ann Stadelbauer-Sampa,
of Egmondville United Church took the se-
cond Sunday in Advent service at Duff's
United Church while Bonnie Lamble was in
the pulpit at Egmondville.
Greeters were Graeme and Helen Craig
and ushers were Keith Wilbee, John
Huether and Barry Hoegy. Alva Wilbee was
organist.
Serving the bread and wine for the Com-
munion were Bruce Clark, Edith Wey,
Margaret Craig, Ray Huether, Emmerson
Mitchell, Graeme Craig, Barry Hoegy and
Roy Williamson.
The second candle for Advent was lit by
Marion Godkin. She and her daughter Don-
na said the prayer.
Christmas Concert
Master of Ceremonies Bonnie Lamble
welcomed the large crowd of children,
parents, grandparents and friends to the an-
nual Sunday School Christmas Concert held
in the basement of Duff's United Church.
Bonnie announced the following program
put on by the Sunday School children:
nursery recitations by Chad McCallum;
Janice McCallum, Marlene Johnson, Jillian
Houston, Sarah McLellan, and Amanda
Gamble, closing with a Christmas wish.
Teachers: Madeline Marks, assistant: Max-
ine Houston.
Piano solos were played by Michael
• Craig, "Away in a Manger", and Tonia
McClure, "The First Noel."
The nursery and primary classes put on a
skit entitled "A Very Special Night." Parts
were as follows: head angel, Lisa
Gingerich; angels, Marlene Johnson, Janice
McCallum, Kerrie McClure, Lee Ann
McDonald, and Sarah McLellan; Joseph,
New grandson for Snell family

LONDESBORO - Congratulations to Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Snell on the birth of their
grandson on December 3. Matthew John is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken McDougall of
Clinton, a brother for Kendra Ann.
Garry Koyle moved into the former Laura
Saundercock residence on December 4.
Edythe •Beacom returned home after
spending two weeks in Homestead, Florida
on Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Millson, Patricia,
Sarah and John of Woodstock' visited with
Dora Shobbrook. On Saturday night, they
attended the wedding of Judith Ann Osmond
and Jack Miller at the Nile United Church
and the reception at Saltford Valley Hall.
Fred and Laurie Tranter; Jennifer and
Craig of Woodstock visited on Saturday wih
her parent Mr. and Mrs. Vic Stackhouse. '
Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Saundercock visited on
Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Peck,
Kelly and Christopher of London.
Spending the weekend with Mr. and Mrs.
Allen Shaddick were Jeff and' Karin
Shaddick, Danny, Stephen and Crystal of
Kitchener. .
At the end of November, Norman
Alexander attended a meeting in Toronto
with the theme Agriculture Land Drainage
in Ontario, Improving the System. The
meeting was arranged by the Ontario Soil
and Crop Improvement Association, with a
view to improving the management of soil
and water in Ontario.
The first day, all the drainage
superintendents in Ontario were asked to
attend. During the next two days, 12 Ontario
organizations concerned with water and
land management had a chance to include
input. The real challeng l to improve the
system, however, lies in the area of erosion
control.
Church News
Greeting the congregation on Sunday
were Rev. •Snihur and Marlene Armstrong.
Ushers for the service were John Hoggart,
Ken Armstrong and Elgin and Dennis
Penfound.
' 'Rev: Snihur led the call to worship and
announced after church next Sunday the
annual potluck dinner will be held.
Following the dinner, games will be played
and a special' visitor will call on the children.
In the evening, a community service will
be held at the Blyth Memorial Hall. Carol
Author talks to Horticultural Society
CLINTON - Members of the Horticultural
Society and guests enjoyed their annual
turkey dinner at the St. Paul's Anglican
Church on November 27. The speaker for the
evening was Ken Reeves of radio and CBC
television talk shows. He was introduced by
Barbara Hicks.
Mr. Reeves told of interesting anecdotes
throughout his developing life as a gardener
and greenhouse operator.
Two books he has written. Food Plants -
Answers That Work and Indoor Gardening,
were available for purchase and contain
answers to everything one wants to know
about. growing plants.
Catherine McKnight conveyed the group's
appreciation to Mr. Reeves for his inspiring
address.
Greta, Nediger was in charge of draws for
door prizes and the winners were especially
happy with their amoryllis bulbs and
baskets of apples.

Valerie and Lewis Pitman
singing will, commence at 7:20 p.m and the
service led by Rev. Snihur will begin at 7:30
p.m.
The second advent candle was lit by Ed,
Mary and Tracy Salverda. The children
collected the ornaments for the tree and the
choir decorated the trees. The junior Sunday
School teacher was Edith Taylor. A carol
sing was held of favorite carols. The sermon
was'WeShall be called Emanuel.
Shuffleboard
There were 13 present for the weekly
shuffleboard games held on December 4.
The winners were, Helen Lee, Vietta
Hoggart and Audrey Thompson. Next
week's games will be held on December.
These will be last games for the year.

Trish Clark; Shepherds, Randy Linton,
Sarah Lamble, Craig Gillis; donkey, Shan-
non Davies; and cow, Amanda Gamble. The
children sang the first verses of "Silent
Night" and "Away in a Manger" with the
audience joining in. Teachers: Gloria Love;
assistant Nita McClure.
Piano solos were played by Susan
Carter,"Christmas Chopsticks"; and "San-
ta Claus is Coming to Town".
The Junior Class I presented "The Safety
First Christmas". Parts were as follows:
Sir Safety, Andrea Gingerich; Roller Skate
Elf, Lori McClure; Ice Skate Elf, Shannon,
Craig; Sled Elf, Sharon Godkin; Wagon Elg,.
Barbara Lamble; Heather Eckel; Stove
Elv, Chris Saur; Toy Elf, Cindy McCallum,
and Pick up Elf, Chris Davies. Teacher is
Dianne McCallum.
A trio of Trish Clark, Lisa Gingerich and
Tara McLellan sang Jingle Bells. Piano
solo, "The Silver Skates", was played by
Sarah Lamble.
Junior class II put on a skit entitled "'Out-
witting a Will". PLaying parts were Samuel
Clark, Greg Fritz; Mrs. Clark, Susan
Carter; Bert, Chris Eckel; Chub, Danny
Taylor; Slim, Greg Clark; Smith, Randy
McClure; and Mrs. White, Elizabeth Lam-
ble.
Piano Solo, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little
Star," was played by Lee Ann McDonald.
Piano solo, "Good KingWenceslas" was
played by Stacey Linton. iano solo, "Joy to
the World" and "Away in a Manager" were
played by Andrea Gingerich.
The senior class put on a play entitled
"The Carolers". Mr. Winters was played by
Manny Taylor, Mrs. Winters by Nancy
Godkin, First Caroler by Steve Fritz, second
caroler by Brian Love, third caroler by
Tonia McClure, fourth caroler by Ron
Stevenson. Teacher is Marie McGavin.
A trio of Elizabeth, Barbara and Sarah
Lamble sang"Every Star Shall Sing a
Carol". pianp solo, "Silent Night", was
played by Shannon Craig.
The Senior class put on a comical skit en-
titled, "Preparing for the Day;'. Piano
solos, "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Up on
the House Top", were played by Sharon
Godkin. Piano solo, "Waltz of the Christmas
Toys" was played by Barbara Lamble.
Bonnie Lamble expressed her thanks to
the teachrs for their work in preparing for
the concert.
As Glenda Carter played "Jingle Bells",
Santa arived.
