To top off her 1985 season, Miss Edwards and her horse Lucky Bonanza took two firsts in international competition and won the Pinto and Paint Youth Championship. Lucky Bonanza, known as Buddy (his stable name), took first place in both the Paint and Pinto Senior Western Pleasure categories during the international competitions held at the Toronto Coliseum in August. The pair also won first place in the Canadian Sire Western Pleasure Stakes and won the Pinto and Paint Youth Championship. "It takes a lot of work. A lot of hard work," commented Miss Edwards on the training she and Buddy do. "I just keep riding and do it over and over again." Miss Edwards, who is 17, started showing horses when she was 12 -years -old. However, her interest in horses started when she was nine -years -old. "My grandfather, Roy Elliott, took me to see some horses and ever since then I've been fascinated by them," said Miss Elliott. Buddy is an 11 -year-old horse who has a duel registration of Paint and Pinto. Miss Elliott also has another horse, Miss Baloe Babe, a three-year-old quarter horse, but does not show her. Although Miss Edwards and Buddy's year gets underway in early spring and doesn't end until fall, her busiest time is in the summer. • "During the summer we travelled 6,000 miles, showing both Paint and Pinto," said Phyllis Edwards, Roxanna's mother. "We'd drive back and forth from each show, leaving home early in the morning (about 4 a.m.) and come back at night. Some nights we'd only get three or four hours sleep and we'd have to get up and be back on the road." Showing a horse can seem like a complex hobby to those not familiar with the terminology or the classes. For instance, there is both western pleasure and English pleasure. Western•pleasure means that the horse "looks like he is a pleasure to ride. The horse is quiet and moves slowly," explained the Edwards. English pleasure is a faster gait with the horses head in a tuck. According to Miss Edwards, there is more of a "bounce" in English pleasure than western pleasure. Another' class the horses compete in is called trail.. This is an obstacle course that puts the rider and horse to the test. "It's a really ' hard course," said Miss Edwards, however, she and Buddy finished third in a- field of 20; taking the first Canadian placing. The international was a rugged , three day event with the Paint showings lasting one day and the Pinto segment lasting two days. "The one day of Paint competition was constant but during theaPinto part we had time to relax,". said Miss Edwards. But the hard work.put-into the shows paid off for Miss Edwards and Buddy. In the 21 classes they took part in, they placed in the top five of 18. • The 1985 Internationals was the second time Miss ' ' Edwards competed in international competition. Her. first time was in 1983 when she won the Youth Championship in the Pinto classification. Now that winter has arrived, there are no clinics to attend or horse, shows to participate in, but 4/caring for Buddy still continues. Miss Edwards has been fortunate enough to have assistance from grandparents Roy and Norene Elliott . and Emmerson Edwards.
