Pets for gifts
A living gift brings love and affection long
after Christmas Day. Whether it's finned,
feathered or furry, a pet can be the most ap-
preciated present any member of the family
could receive. For youngsters, the gift of a
gerbil or hamster allows them to learn to ac-
cept responsibility as they take care of their
new charge. And, small pets can be endless-
ly entertaining when the gift includes a
special "habitat" the animals can explore
and turn into permanent living quarters.
For an older person, pets bring compa-
nionship as well as a measure of safety. For
the senior citizen who's active and has some
time to spare, a dog might be just the thing.
If he's house -bound with a lot of time to
devote to a hobby, the senior might enjoy
fish -keeping. Many pet shops offer starter
kits that include everything anyone could
need for their first fish tank.
Birds add a little spring to the house all
year round. If the recipient wants to spend
time taming and training a Cockatiel or
Mynah, for example, they'll find themselves
with an entertaining pet who can talk, per-
form tricks, and perk up every day of the
week.
Products
designed •
with children
in mind
Many Christmas products are designed
specifically with chidren in mind. For
example, they can enjoy hours of fun and
fantasy with special Christmas books, some
of which contain mazes, connect -the -dots
and pencil games as well as colouring
pages. These items are particularly popular
when the weather outside keeps youngsters
looking for indoor fun.
Puzzles for adults and children are also
having a popularity surge and some
manufacturers have added a new dimension
to their appeal. For instance, Hallmark's
Puzzle Plus is more than just something to
piece together. When completed, one puzzle
doubles as a board game with moveable
pieces. Some puzzles come with three
dimensional pieces that take the puzzle out
of t,§ realm of flat. Mini puzzles that can be
tucked into a suitcase or back -pack are
great stocking stuffers-especially for the
puzzle afficionado.
