Eaten. eseason for
live Christmas free
The spirit of Christmas — past, present
and future — can live on now that many
retailers are offering live Christmas trees
for sale.
Many of these are smaller trees suitable
for tabletop use and some are available with
a few decorations already attached.
Best of all, you can plant your Christmas
tree in the garden after the holiday season is
over and enjoy your tree for years to come.
These live Christmas trees do require
special care, says Horticulture Crop Ad-
viser, Burke McNeill of the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food's plant industry
branch.
Indoors, the most important factor is to
keep the roots moist at all times. A good
soaking, once a week will keep the plant
fresh and prevent the needles from dropping
while indoors.
"The tree should be watered as soon as it
is brought home from the store; too often
the trees are not properly watered in the
store and they arrive home very dry,"
McNeill said.
After the Christmas season has passed,
place the tree in the coolest part of the house
, for a few days, before moving the tree out-
doors.
Bury the roots, pot and all, into the garden
until spring.
If the tree survives the winter, the tree
can then be lifted out and planted in a per-
manent site.
`This works best in a few areas in
southern Ontario. In most other areas, the
soil will be frozen making it impractical to
plant the tree in the garden. Try placing it in
the garage or shed and wrapping the roots
with straw or other insulating material and
with some luck, the tree will still be alive .1
the spring," he said.
Don't keep tree
in house too long
A fresh -cut Christmas tree can pose a
threat as a fire hazard, says Horticulture
Crop Adviser, Burke McNeill of the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food's plant in-
dustry branch. Keep the tree in the house a
maximum of two weeks. Stand the tree in
moist' sand or in a reservoir filled with
water. Be sure all decorations on the tree
are fire retardant and all electrical lights
are in good repair. Discard the tree as soon
as the festive season is over.
