A pet can add a little companionship to anyone's life, so why not give one to a friend or
relative this Christmas? One thing to keep in mind while selecting a pet is the person's
lifestyle. (Shelley McPhee photo)

Pets offer year-round fun
If you've found a gift for just about
everyone on your shopping list save that
very special older companion or grand-
parent, perhaps a gift that will remind them
how much you care year-round would fit the
bill.
A pet can offer an older person a wealth of
warmth and companionship that lasts long
after the holiday decorations have been put
away.
According to the Pet Information
Bureau, friendship and love
from pets help reduce
stress and alleviate loneliness
In fact, a recent study
indicated that heart attack
patients who owned pets
actually lived longer
than their non -pet owning
counterparts.
Older couples whose
children have
already grown and left the
house, will discover that a pet can
help fill the void created by the "empty
nest."
A pet can be talked to, confided in and
cared for, and elderly people who live alone
will certainly enjoy the unquestioning atten-
tion and affection a loving pet can provide.
Before selecting a pet for Christmas,
there are several important questions that
should be answered.
First, the size of a person's home should
guide you in choosing the type of
animal that will live most
comfortably in that environ ment.
Second, carefully consider the
older person's lifestyle, so that
a pet will be a welcome and
suitable addition to their
regular routine.
Tree trimming fun
Trimming the Christmas tree is a celebra-
tion all itself! Many families have tree trim-
ming parties for close friends and relatives.
But before you get to all the fun make sure
you inspect the light strings so there are no
frayed ends or exposed wires. Lights can be
strung at random or in any pattern your im-
agination conjures up. Keep larger and
heavier lights and trimmings on the lower
half of the tree, tapering toward the top.
