POPULAR MiTSI(:
buy Canadian records for Christmas
By Janet Tench
With Christmas just around the corner,
everyone is looking for gifts. For anyone
buying for those "incomprehensible" teens,
here is a guide to some of the most popular
records of the season, all of which are Cana-
dian.
First is Brian Adams' Reckless, the best
selling Canadian LP in history. With
Adams' gruff voice, power chords, and
danceable beat, he has become the Cana-
dian equivalent of Bruce Springsteen. This
award winning album contains the hits
"Run to You", "Heaven", "Somebody",
and "Summer of '69".
Platinum Blonde's Alien Shores is also a
platinum album. Because Mark Holmes,
their singer/songwriter hails from England,
their music has crisp tension and drive that
makes for good dance music. It includes.the
singles "Crying Over You", and "Situation
Critical".
Black Cars is Gino Vaneli's biggest
album in a long time. His mellow style is
enhanced by the technology of the '80s to
make an album especially appreciated by
girls. Included is the title track and "It
Hurts to be in Love."
Yet another platinum album for teens this
Christmas is Gowan's Strange Animal. In-
fluenced by progressive bands, Gowan has
presented a highly innovative album,
"Criminal Minds", "Strange Animal", and
"Cosmetics" will be familiar.

A companion album for Strange Animal is
Gowan's self -titled 1982 LP, re-released by
CBS aided by the "Keep Up the Fight"
video, it reveals Gowan as he first tests out
his style. Familiar to anyone who has seen
him in concert will be "Jet White", "Keep
Up the Fight", and "Victory".
Up and coming bands
Mayhem, whose lead singer, Sue Helrn, is
from Goderich, will be playing in Clinton on
New Year's Eve., They play the recent
dance tunes with a relaxed ease that makes
them a good party band.
Steel Lily from Brantford, who've been to
Clinton twice, become more dazzling with
each show. They demonstrate strung direc-
tion and much professionalism with their
amazing stage presence. They prefer the
challenge of songs by Deep Purple, the Scor-
pions, Aerosmith, and Ted Zepplin to top of
the charts fluff. As well, they are playing
some serious music, new on their playlist is
"Morning Dew", a song dealing with
nuclear war. Like most bar bands, Steel Lily
have songs of their own, but the six that they
play fit so well into the set that r,ne rinPcn'+
know that they're not covers. Of these "Iron
Lady" and "Bandit" stand out.
We may have another Helix here, so be
sure to catch them the next time they're in
the area.
Blyth Festival Singers
present two performances
For many people m the area, attending
the traditional concert of the Blyth Festival
Singers marks the first event in the celebra-
tion of the Christmas season. 'This year the
choir will present two performances in
Memorial Hall on Sunday, December 1 at 3
p.m. and 8 p.m.

new to our audiences, as well as familiar
Christmas songs. Throughout the program

is invited to join.
The Festival Singers are directed' by
Laurie Iowbotham or Listowel and accom-
panied by Louise McGregor of Clinton. •

concert has been the inclusion of • a -
childrens' choir and this year the choir is

School Choir under the direction of • Lori
Nelson perform with them. Lori was a
