By Elizabeth A. Kettlewell
when the congregation of the®St. Paul's
Anglican Church in Clinton attended the ser-
vige of consecration of -their =newly built
church in November 1865, it must surely
have been the most joyful celebration in the
history of their church..
It was indeed a renewal of personal faith
'in their- belief "in -miracles !-In-Januarrof—
that same year their three-year-old curch
had been totally destroyed by fire, an in just
11 inonths, this dedicated, ambitious con-
gregation not only built, but completely paid
for their new church.
The Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Huron
celebrated that historic occasion with them.
This joyful event was celebrated again at St.
Paul's on Sunday, December 1, 1985 when
the guest celebrant bishop Derwyn I). Jones
re -dedicated the church on the occasion of
the 120th anniversary of the building and
consecration of this historic Anglican chur-
ch.
Following the processional hynui, The
Rev. Gordon Sinunons, rector of St. Paul's,
greeted the congregation and visitors, and
announced that the Feast of Dedication ser.
. vice_would: be_ taken -from. the_ new_I3ook - (if
Alternative Services of the Anglican Church
of Canada.
The Collect of the day was read by Bishop
Jones, followed by the actual service of re-
dedication which took place at the front. Ac-
companying the Bishop during this portion
of the service were Rev. Simmons assisted
by Grant Morgan; John Morgan, who
assisted the bishop; and Jeff Taylor serving
as cross -bearer.
The first Lesson was taken from the Old
Testament book of Jeremiah which was
read by -Jeff McNairn: John Cochrane. read
the second lesson from the book of Thessalo-
nians. The reading of the Holy Gospel was
from St. Luke, read by Rev. Sinununs.
Under the direction of the St. Paul's
organist and_ choir leader, laurel Lavis, the
choir sang the anthem. The guest soloist
was the talented Barbara Hodgins who sang
and played on the guitar her original curn-
position.based on the story_of. the St. Pa uI's
fire in 1865.
In the sermon, Bishop Jones spoke on the
meaning of the liturgical words, "As it was
in the beginning, is now, and shall ever be,"
applying it to the problems faced at the.time
of the disaterous fire, and the'challenges of
today's congregations. He Spoke of the con-
stant changes of church life, and the need to
grow and benefit by changes. He. stressed
the -importance -of- revering -history- of- the—
church, and the acconcplishrnents of its ear-
ly members.
Prior to the celebration of Holy Currunu-
ninn, Mrs; Beth Sin,rnnns, wife of th< It<•r _
tor, lead the reading of the Litany. The ser-
vice was concluded with the singing of the
Doxology by the choir.
A social hour in the Parrish Hall was ar-
ranged by the Ladies of the 'St. Paul's
Friendship Guild, and was a time of
refreshments and enjoyable visiting with
old friends. Among—the—congregation
greeted at St. Paul's, a warm welcome was
extended to several members who are now
residents at Huronview. Out of town
visitors, well known to the parrish were the
Rev. Douglas S. Pitts and Mrs. Pitts of
Bayfield, and Rev. George and Mrs.
Youmatoff of Bayfield.
Bishop Jones enjoyed meeting meeting St.
Paul's youngest meinber, Nathanial Peel,
son of Carol and Alan Peel. The Bishop was
also greatly interested in talking to Mrs.
Cela Beacom Sloman, Clinton's. Member of
the Order of Canada, as descendant of the
Beacom fancily who were early Clinton set-
tlers, and active throughout the history of
St. Paul's.
Bishop Jones recalled the occasion during
his student years, 40 years ago, when he
preached -at -St -Paul's. ,11is presence at the
service of celebration on Sunday ,will be
recorded as a delightful highlight in this
year which marks the 150th birthday of St.
Paul's Anglican Church, Clinton.
