This year, Canada Post expects to handle letters from more than 50 thousand girls and boys ( and a few adults) in the area on behalf of the jolly old fellow. Canada Post has helped Santa answer more than one and a half million letters since the Santa Letter Program was in- augurated on a cross-country basis in 1982. The program was meant to enhance local individual efforts that had been going on for years, and to give children in many parts of the country an opportunity to get a letter from St. Nick for the first time. Toward that end, replies have been prepared in several languages (in addition to English and Fren- ch) including Polish, Portuguese, Viet- namese, Dutch and Chinese. When postal of- ficials learned that several children atten- ding a school for the blind in Brantford had written to Santa, replies were prepared and sent back u1 braille. For the most part, letters to Santa are culled from ,the mail stream. althdoi h several post offices have set up a box especially for Santa's mail in the lobby. In 18 cities and towns in Huron Division, letter carriers marching in local Santa Claus parades are collecting thousands of letters from the small fry along the parade route. For their part, children wishing to write to St. Nick are asked to be sure to include a return address (and postal code) and to be sure to get their letters in no later than December 13 (to ensure Santa's reply gets back to them before December 25! ). Santa's address is: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE, CANADA, HOH OHO. high water level could cause erosion Do you have takeshote property that is being threatened by erosion'? The current high water level in Lake Huron is probably the cause. In response to these problems, the Ministry of Natural Resources has established an extension service to provide technical • advice and information to property owners on the protection of shoreline properties. Owners of lakeshore property between Port Franks and approximately two and a half miles north of Bayfield ( Lot 31, Concession 1, Goderich Township) should contact. the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority ( ABC'A) in Exeter ( 235-2610) should they wish to utilize this service prior to carrying out remedial works. The Conservation Authority will collect all • the necessary information about the applicant's erosion problem and forward it to the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Ministry will then arrange to have a consulting engineer contact the applicant and meet at the site. At no cost to the applicant, the shoreline erosion consultant will look at the problem and follow up with a written assessment that outlines possible solutions. Alec Scott, Water Resources Co-ordinator with the ABCA, is the contact person for this program. Mr. Scott says that each situation will be assessed by the Conservation Authority to ensure that a legitimate erosion problem exists before the details are sent to the Ministry of Natural Resources. Financial assistance for any erosion control construction work is not available through this program. Persons desiring such monetary help would have to apply to their municipality for a low interest loan under the Shoreline Property Assistance Act. Mr. Scott summarizes the Technical Advisory Service this way: "People with shoreline erosion problems can get someone knowledgeable to come and look at the problem, and offer some ideas about what can be done." The advisory service is available until March 31, 1986. r CLINTON NEVYS-RECORD, WEDNESDAY, pEcppg1; ,91 "r^-{IE?;,ag }9. Atlas has 100,000 deficit tl IP By Stephanie Levesque A deficit of about $100,000 for the Huron County historical. atlas is expected at the end of the year. The financial statement of the book which was launched inOctober was presented at a special meeting of Huron County council. It cost the 'county $226,468 to publish the atlas and at the end of November the county had received, revenue totaling $140,454. However, the deficit is offset by the fact that 2,000 copies of the atlas have yet to be sold. The 'atlas is available at the county house and•various retail outlets across the county for $59.60. Atlas committee chairman Grant Stirling of Goderich Township. said he expects a large portion of the $100,000 deficit will be recovered, but does anticipate a small shortfall. • - He shrugged off the shortfall noting .it is the first time the county, has undertaken such a project. Reeve Stirling added it would probably be another 100 years before another atlas is published.
