Reaching the top is tough As anyone who
has ever strove to be among the best in their
fields well knows. it usually takes years of
hard work to achieve even a inodicrum Dt
success, which all too often comes and goes
fleetingly.
That is why, none of those initially involved
in the formation of the Harmony Ht -Utes
womens barbershop chorus would have
expected the rapid recognition the group has
received, when it was first chartered, only
one year ago May.
The Seaforth-based group. which also
draws members from nearby communities
competed in its first area competition in
Niagara Falls last spring. 'I'he Hi -Utes
finished eighth and were chosen as alternates
for the International Convention of Harmony
Inc., held November 8-10, in Ottawa. When'
one of the top seven choruses had to drop out.

months between competitions; turned in an

The Harmony Relates came into being in
May, 1984, when founding members Doreen
Strong and Joan Campbell got the ball rolling
with a simple advertisement in the ,local
paper inviting interested singers to try out.
About 15 people attended the'first practice
session at the Seaforth Public School.
Since them, ;It's just grown in leaps and
hounds " said Mrs. Strong, of the group,
which now boasts nearly 50 members. Mrs.
Strong said the Hi -Lutes are always open to
new members and interested persons may
