From the moment a child is born, the parent is there to record every move with the camera. Certainly we were typical. The first child we overbid,; the second we were more reasonable about. But when the third, our son, was born, 11 years later, we reverted back to the extremes we had used with the first. In fact, we put a picture of our son on our Christmas card every year: Our son with the dog, our son with his pet rabbits, our son in his cowboy outfit, and so on. Finally our son rebelled. Hc told us in no uncertain terms that he no longer wanted to be featured op our cards, He pointed out that, at the rate we were going, when he got to be 20, we would still be sending out cards showing a picture of him -- with his car, with his girlfriend, etc, Secretly, we had to admit that he was probably right, although we put on an outward show of • injured pride. The next Christmas we used a picture of our dog on the card. We got even with our son by telling him that we had received many more comments about how cute the dog was than we ever had about him. "Good," he said. "lust so long as I'm not on the card." During the following, years OUT son was quite reluctant to have any pictures taken of him. We did manage to get him playing football, graduating from high school and college and at family gatherings. But photo opportunities became scarce as he grew older. He was put on the night shift and his work was in the heart of Times Square. On the first night of his new job, our son took off his jeans, T-shirt and dirty sneakers and put on a newly purchased three-piece suit, a shirt and tie and carefully polished shoes. I sneaked out the camera and took a picture of him. It turned out I had acted in the nick of•time. The next night he was wearing his jeans, T-shirt and dirty sneakers. "It's a jungle out there," he told us "I was a target before. Now 1 don't look as it I have anything worth stealing That was certainly true. His • camouflage worked and he survived the summer intact He next got a lob a1 d ameraman to ,i TA., news show 'faking other people'', pictures was apparently a whole different matter from having his picture taken At least we could "ax 'r1 about his satet'6 as he now had normal daynine hours We didn t relax long. He was covering all kinds of stories and was constantly in the middle of knifings, fires, people running amok and,. worst of all, he sometimes went up in a rickety helicopter to film scenes of disasters, such as floods, often in the midst of a storm. By this time our son had moved into Manhattan and we usually only saw him when he brought his dirty laundry home for a visit. Then one morning, we got an excited phone call from him. • "Watch the noon news!" he said: "I'm in, the lead story!" 1 swelled with motherly. pride. . "What did you dor' 1 asked. "1 was arrested and put into jail," he said, and hung up. It. was not .a call designed to brighten a mother's heart, but I took comfort from the fact that he had phoned; so he was obviously alive. I turned on the TV set at noon and sure enough, in the opening story, 'there were shots of our son, He was in a courtroom in a small suburban town to cover a • controversial hearing. He was taking a shot of the judge in the front of the room as the proceedings wereibout to start. Suddenly the judge shouted: "Is that a camera back there? Get that camera out of here! Arrest that man!" "That man" was our son. There followed fleeting shots of a scuffle at the back of the room and glimpses of two policemen grabbing our son and trying to drag him out. Our son'kept filming in the best tradition of • journalism. He kept the camera going as the police led him down a hall and' into a "holding cell." • To my great relief, the next shot showed him being released, a big grin on his face, while a reporter standing by 'explained that the television station had permission to film the hearing in the courtroom and it had all been a "misunderstanding." Our son thought the whole experience was rather a lark,. • Please turn to page 18 t 17 SEIGEL'S SHOE Warehouse 2ND Floor SPECIALS CHILD'S WINTER BOOTS Walerprool assorted.
