the blockbuster musical
celebrating P. T. Barnum's
rise to circus immortality,
opens at the Grand Theatre
on November 25 and will run
until December 14. Starring in
the Grand's 1985/86 holiday
production are Rick Scott. as
Phineas T. Barnum and
Jayne Lewis as his wife,
Charity, under the direction
of Artistic Director Don
Shipley. Barnum is a co-
production with the Manitoba
Theatre Centre in Winnipeg
where it has been running
since October 17. It closes
there on November 9.
Barnum was originally pro-
ced on the Broadway Stage
n 1980, winning three Tony
Awards and enthusiastic
praise from critics and au-
diences alike. With music by
Cy Coleman, 'lyrics by
Michael Stewart and book by
Mark Bramble, the career of
America's greatest showman
is colourfully traced from 1835
to 1881 when he joined James
A. Bailey to form 'The
Greatest Show on Earth'.
Artistic Director Don
Shipley has created a produc-
tion .simply bursting with
.4nelodies, marches, ragtime
and burlesque. He directed
last season's The Music
.Cure/Pial Encore!, Cap-
tivatin' Cole and Joe Egg and
he will direct the Grand's up -
.coming production of Passion
',before finishing his term as
Artistic Director on January
10.
• Mr. Shipley directs a ver-
satile cast of 19 in Barnum
Rick Scott, who composed
.and performed the score for
the National Film Board's
Street Musique wich
garnered five major film
awards, pioneered the Cl3C-
TV's children's series` Swit-
chback, was nominated for
two 1985 ACTRA alvards for
the television special Rick
Scott: Feet First and who
recently starred in the Van-
couver Arts Club production
of Barnum;
Jayne Lewis, who perform-
ed at the Grand in last
season's production of Cap-
tivatin' Cole, most recently
created the Judy Garland -like
character of Peggy Hart in
the new musical The Living
Legend and who will perform
the lead in Evita for the Nep-
tune Theatre in Halifax
following her engagement at
the Grand;
Marion Adler, who recent-
ly performed in the Stratford
Festival's production of The
Pirates of Penzance and
whose credits include the co -
authorship of a leading role in
Sweet Meat, The Romance
Show for Toronto's Adelaide
Court Theatre;
Sally Cahill, who was
nominated for this year's
Dora Mayor Moore Award for
her performance in Once
More With Fooling and who
recently starred in the
Charlottetown Festival's pro-
duction of Sleeping
Arrangements;
Miles Cohen, whose
numerous credits range from
performances in drama for
the Shaw Festival to comedy
for Second City and whose

Tomas Kubinek, who since
the age of six has developed
his magic and juggling tricks
and most recently has per-
formed at festivals and
nightclubs across Canada, the
United States and as far south
as Mexico;
Grind' Kuchirka, a former
member of The Flying
Grindl Kuchirka and William Merton Malmo enjoy clowning around
in the Tony Award-winning circus musical Barnum, playing at the
Grand Theatre from November 22 to December 14. This blockbuster
musical celebrating the life of legendary showman P.T. Barnum is

whose numberous acting
credits include performances
for the Stratford Festival, Ed-
monton's Citadel Theatre and
the National Arts Centre in
Ottawa and who has served as
a fight arranger for more
than twenty productions for
the Stratford Festival;
Darlene Mignacco, who has
played many diversified roles
including Nina in The Seagull
and Gittel in Two for The
Seesaw and who will soon be
seen playing the principal
role of Sara in a new feature
film called Psycho Girls;
Jeffrey Prentice, a teacher
at the Etobicoke School for
the Arts in Toronto, who most
recently performed in The
Pirates of Penzance for the
Stratford Festival and whose
numerous credits include a
role in Die Fledermaus for
the Canadian Opera.

Derek Scott, who recently
returned returned from a
European tour where he per-
formed his solo
mime/clown/juggling show
which won him first prize at
the Edinburgh International
Fringe Festival in the Busk-
ing Street Performing
category and who worked as
a magic consultant for
Prague for Toronto's Tar-
ragon Theatre;
Jessie Thomson, whose ver-
satile talents as an actress,
singer and dancer have taken
her to stages across Canada
and whose television credits
include roles in Little Gloria
... Happy At Last and CBC -
TV's Empire and;
Helen -Claire Tingling, who
on stage has played a variety
of roles including an eight-
year. -old runaway in Amy and
The Trunkman and the part of
Bobby, the young male
lawyer in The Club, and who
has performed with her musi-
cian husband, Greg Diakun,
at all the top London night
spots.
The Choreographer for
Barnum is Jacques Lemay,
whose credits include
