These days everyone uses
power tools. Everyone uses
toxic chemicals. They're us-
ed for cleaning the house, cut-
ting the grass, cooking din-
ner, enjoying•a hobby. And
they're potentially dangerous.
When they're used at work,
employees are made aware of
the dangers, and are for
should be given protective
equipment.
Not at home. And yet, if you
Course
use your furnace room as a
workshop without taking sen-
sible precautions, you're risk-
ing a fire. If you clean the
bathroom or tile floor without
opening a window, you could
be putting yourself in danger
from noxious fumes.
Don Mitchell, who is In-
dustrial Safety Specialist with
the Oshawa Group, says peo-
ple don't think about the acci-
dent potential at home as

normal asparagus grow, they
turn green by simply being
osed to ordinary daylight. To
ent them from turning green
remaining white, the
asparagus beds are covered with
a mixture of straw and loose
dirt. Cauliflower is another
vegetable which goes through a
similar process. If it were
allowed to be exposed to the
sun, it would turn brownish;
therefore the longest leaves of
the plant are pulled up over the
white part and tied with twine.
Europeans prize white
asparagus which is grown in
France and is tender and delicate
in flavor. The white asparagus
grown in Mexico is tougher and
has a slightly bitter after-taste.
NO HERBS IN HERBAL LOTION
In reference to Vaseline
Intensive Care Hand Lotion, on
the bottle is written "Fresh
Herbal." I can't find any herbs
in the list of ingredients. Why
do they say this?
Charles Torrey, a product
safety coordinator at
Chesebrough-Pond's, said,
"There are no label or
advertising claims for Fresh
Herbal Intensive Care Lotion
relative to the product containing
herbs or spires. 'Fresh Herbal'
refers to the fragrance, which is
composed of ingredients that
develop the odor of herbs."
This is a classic example of a
company's use of a trendy catch
word designed to sell the
product. It should also illustrate
that the name of a product need
have nothing to do with its
ingredients. ■

Canada. Safety Council
figures for 1982 show 1,915.ac-
cidental deaths in the home,
the farm and premises in
Canada, 631 of them in On-
tario. Mitchell says the sim-
ple application at home of
some of the safety cautions
that are routine at work
would help to cut down those
accidents.
For instance, there is in-
halation of poisons. "A lot of
chemicals we use are
poisonous, or can cause an ox-
ygen deficient envrionment in
a confined space. If you have
the window and door shut
while you're cleaning the
bathroom, you've just created
a confined area. If you put
down plastic cement for tiles
and yoti don't want to open the
window because it's cold, you
have improper ventilation."
Pesticides present a dif-
ferent aspect of the potential
for danger in chemicals.
