ay Sonja Fleinze 'are sprayed in the sprmg, at the
beginning of summer and during
the middle of summer with a
chemical called daminozide.
This chemical controls the
size of the apple, gives it a
longer shelf life and intensifies
the color of red apples. Washing
the apple won't get rid of it
because it actually goes right to
the core.
Over one-third of the apples
in the U,S. are subjected to this
treatment. Traces of it even
show up in apple juice
concentrate. It's also used, but
not as extensively, on other
fruits and vegetables.
Just curious, but why is it that
apples in the supermarket are
all just about the'same size?
When I was a yoangster we had
a small orchard, and at harvest
time the apples were of every
conceivable size.
This is an astute observation
which, I'm sorry to say, brings
forth a rather disturbing
response. According to. Albert J.
Heier, a spokesman for the U.S.
Environmental Protection
Agency, certain apples, mainly
McIntosh, Red Delicious,
Golden Delicious and Stayman,
Same Size?
The government is considering
banning daminozide. 1 couldn't
care less whether my apples
were of equal size, but I care a
lot if they're chemically rotten to
the core!
FRUIT IN BLACKENED CANS
Recently I bought three cans of
canned fruit on sale — two
cans of peaches and one can of
pears. One can was black on
the inside, and you could see
wkere the acid had eaten
through. The other two were
the same. I threw everything
away and would not eat the
fruit. Who is -responsible for
something like this, and what
should I do next time? Linda
Turk, Ontario, Ore.
The cans you bought were
probably unearthed from some
storeroom where they had been
sitting thibugh all kinds of
temperature variations for at
least three years. These cans had
high acidity or corrosive
properties, and you were wise
not to have consumed their
contents.
Generally cans so affected
will bulge eventually. The ,
person responsible for putting
them on sale either had no idea

WHITE ASPARAGUS
At a French restaurant I
ordered asparagus as my
vegetable and they were pure
white. Why do they find it
appetizing to bleach a vegetable
with chemicals? I refused to eat
then and would like to know
now what chemical was used.
White asparagus are not
