* MY 1082 Pontiac Pari-
sietwe has air conditioning,
there are 120,000 km on the
odteter' and I bought it
sec ,nd-hand. It starts fine
when the engine is cold and
pulls away with no trouble.
But when I accelerate after
stopping in traffic, it hesitates
repeatedly and there is little
response. It does not stall, but
I roust tap the gas pedal
several times to get any
response. It performs well
after the engine warms up. I
would appreciate your
suggestions.

But. in the mid -seventies, on
most cars, thepgints and cart-
denser were replaced with the
more efficient electronic igni-
tion system. Too, more
vacuum or electrically con-
trolled emission devices were
added to improve
performance.
This may sound like a con-
fusing list of technical data to
the unititiated. But it does
make it clear that a person
who is not familiar with these
controls could do more harm
than good by groping in the
dark on a trial and error
basis.
Keep in mind that a tune-up
is not complete until all the
emission controls have been
thoroughly tested and
repaired as necessary by a
qualified technician.
** In most cases, an engine
that is long overdue for a
thorough tune-up, done by a
skilled " technician who is
familiar with the step by step
procedure spelled out in
General Motors, Pontiac ser-
vice manual, is the cause of
this trouble.
The problem clearing after
driving for a few minutes sug-
gests that malfunctions in one
or more of the many emission
controls is causing too lean a
fuel/air mixture during the
warm-up.
According to my records,
the likely culprits are:
* Early fuel evaporation
(EFE) device not functioning
during the warm-up.
* Automatic choke not mov-
ing all the way to the cold -
start mode.
* Exhaust gas recirculating
valve (EGR) not remaining
fully closed during the warm-
up.
* Heat control valve in the air
cleaner's snorkel not in the
cold -start mode, or hot-air
pipe between snorkel and ex-
haust mainfold disconnected,
missing, or perforated.
* Carburetor's pump circuit
too lean.
* Late ignition timing, or
defects in the controls that
automatically advance the
timing as engine speed
increases.
* Unwanted air entering the
engine.
* Vacuum hose plugged or in-
advertently placed on the
wrong control.
Years ago, when perfor-
mance lagged, replacing the
points, condenser, plugs, gas
filter, air cleaner element and
checking the timing would
often be the cure.

* When changing the oil on
my slant -six Dodge, if I don't
pour the new oil in very slow-
ly, it builds up inside the
rocker cover and spills out of
the oil -fill hole. What is the
cause and can I fix it myself?
J. Haves, Toronto
** I believe the oil return
holes are plugged with sludge. -
Pulling the rocker cover,
removing the muck on top of
the head, pushing a wire down
through the return holes, then
blowing them out with an air
gun is usually the remedy.
After doing this, do not start
the engine until the oil and
filter has been changed.

short, slow speed runs, infre-
quent oil and filter changes,
faulty crankcase ventilating
system and a generally worn
