Over 100 attend services
at Clan Gregor Square
By Helen Owen
Well over 100 people were at Clan Gregor
Square on Sunday morning when the living
paid tribute to the dead of two World Wars.
The cairn, with its refurbished plaques was
the focal point of the occasion. Rev. George
Youmatoff conducted the service.
Brig. Fred Clift read out the names from
the roll of honor - 1914-18 - Edward Adley,
Arthur Clark, Harvey Currie, Kenneth
Currie, Russel Erwin, Victor Evans, Allen
McDonald, Robert McLeod, William
McNaughton and Wilfred Torras. 1939-45 -
Stewart C. Cann, Robert David Hopson and
Richard V. Weston.
Next came the prayer for peace and the
placing of wreaths with Ed: Oddleifson
placing the wreath for the Province of
Ontario, Councillor Lloyd Huffman for the
Village of Bayfield, Mert Merner for the
Royal Canadian Legion, Mrs. Lyle Hill for
St. Andrew's United Church, E.J. Hovey for
Trinity Anglican Church, Joe Chapman for
Bayfield Baptist Church, Bill Armstrong for
Knox Presbyterian Church, Janet Smith for
the Bayfield Lioness Club, Al Hughes for the
Bayfield LionsClub, Tim West for the
Bayfield Optimist Club, Murray Jesson in
memory of his own and his wife's father.
Guides and Brownies wreath was placed by
Samantha Scott and Shannon Schilbe, and
for. the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, Derek
Bradshaw and Carl Van der Wouden.
As Eric Earl lowered the flag to half mast,
bugler Rob Adams sounded the Last Post, a
traditional military tribute to the fallen. For
the double rank of veterans present, who
had marched smartly to the cairn, the
echoing notes were another link with
comrades.
The service concluded with the Rev.
Youmatoff's quotation from Laurence
Binyon's "Poems for the Fallen" - 'They
shall not grow old ... We will remember
them.' And on this cold November morning
Bayfield residents paid their respectful
tribute to the fallen.
This was an occasion which the late Canon 10
Paull, himself a veteran of both World Wars,
always attended, and this year another
familiar figure was missing, Mgr.
Bourdeau, who has now left the village. For
the young children, and their parents who
were present there are no memories ofthe
wars and the sacrifices made, and yet - they
were there on Clan Gregor Square, and the
promise made in Binyon's poem is fulfilled.
How they scored
The Euchre Club met on October 20, and
the results of the games played were as
follows: ladies' high - Fern Baker; ladies'
low - Barbara Strachan; ladies' lone hands -
Nettie McClinchey. Winners for the men
were - gent's high - Doc Lindsey; gent's low -
Glen Dowson: gent's lone hands - Harry
Baker.
