A haunting hunt
Anyone driving along Highway 8 recently,
must have noticed the deer check station
signs. Hunters take their catch of the day to
these stations and have them weighed,
analyized and what not.
Hunting is a sport. Some groups may
disagree, but nevertheless, it is classified as
a sport. The dictionary describes hunting as
"the act of a person or animal that hunts,
especially the pursuit of game." The word
hunt has several similar meanings with one
being "go after wild animals, game birds,
etc. to catch or kill them for food or sport."
Another is "drive ( out, away) ; pursue;
harry; persecute."
I personally don't mind the thought of
hunting but I don't have the stomach for it.
Growing up in what was then the
township, with a forest across the street, I
saw plenty of wild animals. But they weren't
the ferocious type, they were the cute kind.
We saw rabbits with their bunnies,
squirrels, chipmunks and plenty of birds
and groundhogs. One morning a fawn was
on the neighbor's lawn and a raccoon in our
tree.
My brothers were hunters. They took
courses and got their licences, bought a
pellet gun and then graduated to a .22. I
could handle the pellet gun, shooting up
discarded cigarette packages, but the .22
had too much)"kick" for me back then.
However, I\was always ready to go along
on their hunting expeditions,. if they'd take
me.
From the stands
My brothers had good aim. One came
home with a hawk. The wings of that bird
decorated our basement for years. But the
most memorable hunting trip for me was
the day we got a rabbit.
My mother told us if we shot a rabbit we'd
have to eat it. No problem.
My brother must have been hard up for
hunting companions on this particular trip
because he agreed to take me along. We put
on our hunting gear, grabbed the dog and
away we went.
I can't remember how long it took us to
spot a rabbit, but when we did, my brother
took careful aim and shot the ball of fur. Our
next task was to get to the rabbit before our
dog did.
Linus, our part golden retriever, could
find the animals like a trained hunting dog,
however, getting the creatures from his
clenched jaws was another story.
We finally got to the rabbit and proudly
carried him home.
I never stopped to think about; the rabbit
as a living thing until my brother started to
Bey inne Marejko
skin it. As he carefully cut the fur away from
the body, I saw strong legs, a stomach,
bones and meat. II
Upon closer examifnation, I saw its eyes
and little nose and mouth.
I'd had enough. I ran upstairs and waited
to see if my mother would really cook this
little guy. True to her word, she did.
Niether my brother. nor I ate much of that
rabbit, claiming it tasted awful. My reason
was guilt. I'm not sure what my, brother's
reason was, but he never shot another
rabbit.
Hunting is a debated sport. Those who
enjoy it, feel there's nothing wrong with
hunting within guidelines, while others think
it is meaningless.
Hunters may have the attitude that
chasing a puck up and down the ice is
meaningless, but those who like hockey find
it.great exercise. It depends on the person.
Although I could never be a hunter, I do
believe hunting helps keep the balance of
nature.
