• Bayfield hockey action
By Helen Owen
Although the score doesn't indicate it the
Varna hockey club played well against the
league leading Knighthawks.
The Knighthawks opened the game on
three quick goals, John,' "Gypsy Rose",
Stanley hitting the mark first with assists
going to Fred Schilbe and Steve Telford.
Then it was Mike Clarke with a pair, both
being assisted by Stan. Varna countered.at
6:16 of the first on a Bill Stephenson goal set
up by Bill Carno, chan and Mark , Taylor.
Jerry Heard replied for. the Hawks on a solo
effort at the 5.02 mark. Paul Robinson
. struck back for Varna with big Mark Taylor
picking up his second assist of the evening.
With only two seconds showing on the score
,clock Mike Clarke winkled the••mesh from a
pretty, set up from Stan and the Hawks were
back in front by three.
The Hawks came out like gang busters in
the second and tallied four more points,
Terry Blok and Steve' Telford picking up
singles with Stan, the Man capping his hat
trick with a pair. Paul McKee, Mike Clarke
and Steve Telford each picked up assists.
The third was a well played • period with
both.goalies playing superbly. Varna scored
first with Ron Keys slapping the puck in on a -
pass from Bill Stephenson. Then it' was the
Hawks turn on a wrist shot from Terry Blok
- Mike "Lumberjack" Warner picked up the
assist.. Steve Telford finished off the night
for the Hawks on a well executed three way
play from Stan and Rocky. Ron Keys round-
ed out Varna's goals on a'well fed pass from
Paul Robinson. The Knighthawks deserve
credit as they played the game without the
services of veterans Stewart Asher and
Donald Mcllwain.
The second game on Nov. 29 was definite-
ly the game to see. It started off chippy as
both teams were determined to win, but
good officiating kept, the game under con -
trot. The Brewers opened the scoring with
just 10 seconds elapsed in the first. Mike
Telford scored unassisted. With 3:55 left in
• the first Murray Connolly scored on a set-up
41, from Boll Snell. After being devastated at
the hands of the Knighthawks' goaltender
last game, Bob Snell got back into form and
notched a goal as Murray Connolly returned
the favor, and picked up an assist. With the
Brewers holding a commanding three goal
lead, Mike Telford notched his second of the
evening, and the• first ended four to zip,
Brewers.
The Warriors got back on track in the se-
cond as Wes Gozzard and Kris "Puppy"
Bedard each scored unassisted goals.
The third period had to have been one of
the best periods of hockey ever played in the
Forum. Mike Wood scored on another long
shot for the Brewers. Then at 16.20 Pooh
Bear Telford scored on a three way play
from Wes Gozzard and John Blanchard.
Coop finished the scoring for the Warriors at
14.35 on an excellent set up from Puppy
Bedard and the game ended 5-4.
The fans were lined up rally again on Fri-
day night as action was hot in both games.
The first of ,the evening saw the Puckers up
against the Blades. With the scent of victory
in the air, and the presence "of Fred "Duff"
Duffey, former Canadian speed skating
champion and former Chicago Black Hawks
player behind the bench, the Puckers inked
the score sheet first as Big Red Ed Fogarty
slid one in on a set up from John Graham.
The Blades opened the second period on a
liell deserved goal by Jim Fleming assisted
by Pete Denomme. Fogarty and Graham
hooked up again. at 15:16 of the second; this
,time with Graham scoring. •
Travis Postill rounded out the scoring in
the second from'Bill "Refrigerator" Sin-
namon, andboth teams went to the dressing
rooms tied at two.
The Puckers struck early in the third with
Larry Johnston•netting one from•Ed Fogar-
ty, and then at 8.20, John Graham notched
his second of the evening again from Ed
Fogarty. Wayne Dunn finished the scoring
for the Puckers from brother Al. Jim Flem-
ing's hard work, nailed one for the Blades
and then, with 4:00 minutes remaining on
the Timex, the calm, cool, almost serene
play of Travis Postill brought the Blades to
within one, but that's the way the game end-
ed. Brian Johnston picked up the assist: •
The second game of the evening was
goalies' duel. Murray Connolly got the game
rolling on a solo effort at the 17:11 mark.
Then at 16:33 Billy "Curly" Cainochan
scored for Varna with Ron Keys assisting.
Dan Taylor then tallied his first of three at
4:38, and then it was Scott Consitt's turn as
he put Varna up by two: Ron Keys and Dan
Taylor picked up assists on the goals.
It was all Varna in the second as they
counted four • more points. Dan Taylor
started the onslaught on a solo effort. Paul
Robinson then hit the mark at 16:14 before
Dan Taylor counted for another from John
Dowson, Bill Stephenson finished the period
on a well placed wrist shot from Scott Con-
sitt.
The third period was Scott Consitt versus
the Brewers as he counted four Varna goals.
Mike Telford started the scoring on a
perfect pass from Gary Connolly. Rob
Boyes then hit for his first of three on a well
executed play by Ritchie "Flash" Cox. Scott
then hit for Varna at 13:13 from Ron Keys
and Dan Taylor, and then again at 10:4
from John Dowson. It was Consitt agar at
9:18, this time from Paul Robinson. Not to
be outdone Rob Boyes answered with two
goals completing his hat trick, and sparking
some life into the Brewers. Mike Telford
scored another for the Brewers at 4:56, but
just as the Brewers seemed to be mounting
a comeback, who else. but Scott Consitt tap-
ped in another for Varna - and that was it!
This coming Tuesday see "Break Away
Bill" and the Puckers face the Warriors,
and the Hawks do battle with the Brewers.
Friday's games see the Warriors pitted
against the Brewers, and the Blades face
the three and two Puckers. Come on out and
see some darn good hockey right here in
your own arena.

the conference terence held in Kingston this August,
of the United Senior Citizens Association.
Several resolutions were made. Opinions
vary as to their wisdom but certainly this is
a very worthwhile and caring organization.
The Bayfield Branch is called the Ever
Youngs and members have achieved a great
deal for the community since their incep-
tion. Meetings are held once a month in the
Municipal Building and ifyou're 65 or older,
you are assured of a warm welcome. A good
game of cards usually rounds out the even-
ing, after the business session. Call Mrs.
John Lindsey or Gwen Pemberton, the
secretary for further details.
The Pioneer Park Association has under-
taken further measures to preserve the
Park. It is part of the ongoing program so
vital for its preservation.
The present phase will hopefully over-
come the problem of surface erosion. This is
a community project, the financial
resources for the work are derived from the
annual Rummage Sale monies and private
donations to the Pioneer Park Association.

The rite of Confirmation was solemnized
at Bayfield Trinity Anglican chtwch on
November 3. Bishop Morse Robinson was
the offlciant and those receiving "the laying
on of hands" were William Storey from Mid-
dletons, St. James with Cynthia Ann Scott,
Carol Ann Wain and her sister Cheryl Lynn
Wain all from Trinity.
Bishop Robinson said that in renewing the
baptismal vows of their parents and god-
parents they were assuming the respon-
sibility of a mission to help build the
kingdom of God. He explained that the
observance of the first great commandment
to worship the Lord thy God and the second
to love thy neighbor as thyself were the
precepts to guide them through a Christian
life.
He explained that the term hospitality
which has the stress in the church's present
goal of Intentional Evangelism means more
than inviting someone to tea, but actually
having a concern for the well being of your
neighbor, regardless of his condition or.
estate.
Following the first communion of the can-
didates presentation were made to Carol
Wain for academic excellence in her studies
for confirmation which, Mr. and Mrs. Mur -

The fire alarm on November 1 was for a
