The restorations of the old Molson's Bank building will be com-
pleted in June of 1987, giving the building its original look. The pro-
ject is costing $50,000.
Restorations put building back to 1871
CLINTON - The restoration of the town
hall and library has enhanced the corner of
Rattenbury and Albert Streets. That section,
of town will house another eye pleasing sight
when the former Molson Bank restorations
are completed.
John Duddy, owner of the building located
at 23-25 Rattenbury St. East, is/undertaking
a $50,000 project which will restore the
building to its original design.
A grant of $15,000 from the Ministry of
Citizenship and Culture, under the Building
Rehabilitation and Improvement Campaign
(BRIC) program has been awarded to Mr.
Duddy.
One of the conditions he had to agree to in
order to get the grant was a heritage
conservation easement be donated to the
Town of Clinton and registered on title to the
property within six months of the grant's
approval.
"It's not an overnight project," said Mr.
Duddy, "It took a year to get the heritage
grant."
The project may be time consuming, but
Mr. Duddy did findthe ministry easy to deal
with.
"I thought it was going to be difficult -'all
the red tape and paper work, but I found the
Ministry of Citizenship and Culture's
heritage branch to be very helpful," he said.
Mr. Duddy has also received assistance
from the Local Architectural Conservation
Advisory Committee ( LACAC) in Clinton.
"Nancy Fisher-Vossen, the, chairman of
the Clinton LACAC, Reg Thompson and
Josephine. Winter have been a tremendous
help. It was Josephine Winter who got me
started on the project," he said.
The 1875 ,building was originally the Royal
Canadian Bank. Sometime between then
and 1879, it became Molson's Bank with the
bank on the first floor and the manager's
living quarters on the second floor.
In 1904 the bank moved to the present
location of the Bank of Montreal.
In the early 1900s the building was joined
with a neighboring structure, and was
turned into Jackson's Clothing Factory. It
was owned by Thomas and William Jackson
and employed a staff of 80. ,
In 1929 the building became the home of
Beatty and Massey -Harris Farm
Equipment. Howard Brunsden was the
owner.
The building was divided into apartments

The former Molson's Bank building at 23-25 Rattenbury St. East in Clinton has been an
apartment building since 1948. Although owner John Duddy is now in the process of mak-
ing the structure similar to its original design, which is shown here in the early 1900s, the
building will still contain apartments.
in 1948 by owner Roy Tyndall. It now houses
six apartments.
Several steps are being taken to return the
exterior of the building to its original look.
The first is the conservation and repair of
the exterior facades which will include the
reconstruction of the former windows and
front door.
The fonndatinn will be repaired and
reconstructed and the building will be
painted in period colors.
Another change will be the reconstruction
of the roof frame which is almost completed.
The project, being handled by Jim
Thompson Carpentry of Seaforth, began in
early August and is expected to be finished
in June of 1987.
