Vampires may have been ordinary people
VANCOUVER - Vamlires and
werewolves may have been ordinary people
who suffered from a rare genetic condition
which affects oxygen transport in the
bloodstream, says a chemist at tyle Univer-
sity of B.C.
Dave Dolphin says research' being con-
ducted at the university indicat$ a set of
blood disorders known as porphgaias may
lie at the root of the legends.
The disorders, of which eight to 10
varieties have been identified,, are caused
by the body's failure to produce porphyrin, a
complex molecule used in hemoglobin and
myoglobin to allow blood to carry oxygen
from the lungs to the body tissues and to
store it once it is delivered.
Since hemoglobin uses atoms of iron to
carry the oxygen, something is required to
modify the iron so it will not oxidize, or rust.
Porphyrins serve this -purpose.
The production of porphyrin, which re-
quires eight biochemical steps, is controlled
at each stage by enzymes, coded by genes. A
failure produced by a bad gene in any step of
the process leads to a breakdown in the pro-
per production and hence to one of the blood
disorders.
Hune1ed
In one form, Mr. Ddiphin said, the body
makes the porphyrin but cannot properly in-
sert the iron, leading to an excess of useless
prophyrin molecules which are stored under
the skin and along the bones.
The porphyrins excite oxygen atoms and
cause sensitivity to light. The oxygen, rais-
ed to its active form, has devastating effects
op living cells, destroying them en masse.
"If you have this condition you learn very
quickly to'go out only at night," Mr. Dolphin
said. "You are very hairy, your' lips and
gums are pulled back (giving the ap-
pearance of large teeth) and you are pro-
bably somewhat deformed."
The result, a hunched person with the ap-
pearance of a wolf, is the classic werewolf,
he said.
"In the second type, the photosensitivity
is not as dramatic but it is still painful. It
hurts, so you,would avoid daylight."
in the second type, Mr. Dolphin said, the
body cannot make enough hence, a
porphyrin -iron combination.
Garlic
"An injection of heme will give the body
what it needs and switch off biosynthesis,"
said Mr. Dolphin.
"The next best thing is probably to drink a
lot of blood. There is no hard evidence that
the heme in blood would survive passage
through the stomach and small intestine but
there's ho reason to suppose it wcjuldn't
either."
Another chemical fact linking vampire
legends to porphria sufferers is the ability of
a chemical called allyl disulphide, the ac-
tive ingredient in garlic, to destroy the por-
phyrin in hemoglobin.
A vampire who consumed garlic would
suffer a severe attack of his condition,
similar to an allergic attack. Hence, the
myth that vampires can be warded off with
garlic.
"Quinine in tonic water has the same ef-
fect, so a vampire cannot drink gin and
tonic," Mr. Dolphin said.
How the vampires of legend might have
deduced that drinking blood would alleviate
their condition is a mystery, butrthe genetic
nature of the problem might indicate a pass-
ing of information from generation to
generation.
Since all forms of porphyria are caused by
faulty genetic structure, inbreeding over
generations might produce a high incidence
of porphyias, Mr. Dolphin said.
Coins supply education.
This Hallowe'en have your coins ready for
the trick -or -treaters and their UNICEF
boxes, and you will be helping UNICEF
supply basic education around the world.
UNICEF brings education and literacy to
children and mothers by ' helping
governments print textbooks, build
, classrooms and train teachers. UNICEF is
particularly interested in closing the gap
between female and male education
statistics. It recognizes that a mother who
can read is in a much better position to care
for and teach her children than is an
illiterate mother.
When you see a Canadian school child at
your door with a UNICEF box on
Hallowe'en, please be generous — you are
helping to bring schooling to another child in
the Third World.
