buffed and polished to bring out the
natural grain of the wood. Other car-
vings are painted. Gaiser uses water-
based acrylic paints, drying each of
the six to eight coats with a hair dryer
before applying the next layer. He
also buys plain glass eyes, and paints
in the red of the wood duck or the gold
of the Mallard himself.
Gaiser took the intermediate bird
carving course at Fanshawe last
year, and is enrolled in the advanced
this time. A loon and a shoveller duck
are on the 1985 curriculum. He is also
working on a sea gull ordered for
December 1.
One of these days Gaiser is going to
have to fill his wife's request for a car-
ving. Dinty complains that she is like
the barefoot shoemaker's wife;
children, grandchildren, brothers and
sisters all have a Gaiser carving, and
she has none.
Perhaps Gaiser will give his wife
part ownership in the one bird he
refuses to part with. It is a shore bird
and her chick, mounted on a piece of
driftwood, currently on display at
Gentleman's Choice.
The price tags Gaiser puts on his
work will never compensate him for
the many hours of work each carving
represents.
"This is a hobby, not a business",
Gaiser commented.
The local carver gets his reward.
from the satisfaction of bringing a
beautiful bird out of a block of wood
through the work of his own hands. '
