cold water
1
Most deaths in cold water are due to rapid
body heat loss (hypothermia) which could
lead to unconsciousness, and in some cases,
drowning and heart failure.
Pound for pound, adult women have a
greater heat loss resistance period in cold
water than men. Similarly, adults last
longer than children, and girls have a higher
resistance than boys.
The major heat loss areas in humans are
the head, chest and groin. The Royal Life
Saving Society Canada (RLSSC) offers
these tips to extend your survival time if one
unexpectedly finds themself in cold water.
-always wear a life jacket when around cold
or rough water.
-don't dive into cold water, jump with feet
hitting the water first.
-remove only loose fitting boots, not
clothing. The clothes will trap the water
next to the skin and acts as an insulator in
slowing body heat loss. If possible, keep a
hat or other covering on your head, even if it
is wet.
-don't exercise. Reduce body movements to
the minimum required to keep your head out
of the water. Use anything in the water, such
as wreckage or logs, to help keep you afloat.
Adopt a tuck position if possible, keeping
your knees drawn up and upper arms close
to the sides of the body. This position is
called HELP (Heat Escape Lessening
Posture.)
-think twice about swimming to shore. Even
a person proven to have swimming strength
and endurance experiences a reduction of 85
per cent in speed and endurance when
clothed and wearing a flotation jacket in
water at an agreeable temperature. Due to
heat loss and lack of blood supply in cold
water, a swimmer gradually loses control of
feet, legs, hand and arm movements.
Therefore, especially' in rough water, an
average victim should not shorten his life
expectancy by wasting body heat in
attempting to swim more than one tenth of
his current proven swimming distance.
Steve Walsh, bass player for the country and western band The Country Companions,
concentrates on the notes while playing a number during the Vanastra Jamboree at the
Community Centre on October 20. The capacity crowd was treated to some fine music by
such local bands as Whiskey Jack, Sidden Bros., Charlie Browns Country, Mellotones.
