The 'new chart predicts higher percent corn moisture readings, for a given meter reading, than did theprevious chart which has been used in Canada since 1977.. The changes are greatest for readings made at low temperatures. For example at 12 degrees Celsius grain 'which was formerly 21.0 percent moisture, now tests 22.3 percent by the new chart; a former reading of 27.0 percent now tests 29.4 percent, and a • •• Bud Counter was one of many ladies who took time out of theh schedule on October 5 to 'decorate. This loss in farm income is a direct wind -fall to Ontario elevators - equivalent to an average of over $22,000 each for the Pro- vince's 4M registered corn dealers. OCPA has registered a protest with the Ontario Grain and Feed Dealers' Associa- tion that the new drying chart was instituted withclut consulting with corn farmers, or without proposing any reduction in drying and handling charges to Off -set the $9 million wind -fall. Discussions with the Dealers' Association are expected to follow. Intense discussions are also underway with the Canali r rommiksion over Until further action is announced, farmers are advised to "shop around" and ask dealers for special compensation to off- set the wind -fall which the new chart has created. "Commercial grain drying is already quite profitable," suggests Ed Kalita, the OCPA president. "There is no reason why a new. drying. chart should increase pro- fitability by '$9 million — especially when every corn farmer will be selling this fall at a loss." • OCTOBER MEMBERSHIP SPECIAL 4 FOR 3!!!
