The new calibration chart, developed . by
the Canadian Grain Commission in Win-
nipeg, is used to convert readings from the
•
standard Model 91.9 moisture meter, used by
almost all commercial elevators in Canada,
to estimates of percent grain moisture.
The 'new chart predicts higher percent
corn moisture readings, for a given meter
reading, than did theprevious chart which
has been used in Canada since 1977.. The
changes are greatest for readings made at
low temperatures. For example at 12
degrees Celsius grain 'which was formerly
21.0 percent moisture, now tests 22.3 percent
by the new chart; a former reading of 27.0
percent now tests 29.4 percent, and a

Ontario Grain and Feed Dealers' Associa-
tion that the new drying chart was instituted
withclut consulting with corn farmers, or
without proposing any reduction in drying
and handling charges to Off -set the $9
million wind -fall. Discussions with the
Dealers' Association are expected to follow.

farmers are advised to "shop around" and
ask dealers for special compensation to off-
set the wind -fall which the new chart has
created.
"Commercial grain drying is already
quite profitable," suggests Ed Kalita, the
OCPA president. "There is no reason why a
new. drying. chart should increase pro-
fitability by '$9 million — especially when
every corn farmer will be selling this fall at
a loss."
