Au old public schoolhouse in Oakville, Ontario, was Chosen for the site. Throughthe foundation's support, proceeds from the 1984 Walk -A. Dog -A Thon held in Oakville and corporate and individual donations, the C.V.C.. bad a financial base to begin renovations to the old schoolhouse. Today, C.V.C. is in its final 'stages of completion and will be officially .opening its doors to qualified visually im- paired Canadians across the country on November 9, 1985. The school is designed to eventually train 120 dogs per year. During the training stage, participants in the program will be provid- ed, at no cost, with: transportation from anywhere in Canada to the school;. team training with their dog; and room and board. The actual cost of this program is $5,600 per student, all of which is paid ,by C.V.C. Dog guides go through a "demanding" training period before they are paired with C.V.C. students. C.V.C. accepts three breeds for their guide dogs: German Shepherds; Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. The majority of the pup - lea nye from professions. breed rs. got ! ight to 10, *0010:44 puppies are Aae., ed in foster !momewfais, a one-year "Soo aliz- ingot period CAW, also receives adult. dogs between one to two years old that have spent their first years in a family environment The dogs are then brought to the school for an intense three-month training program. At the end of this program, the. dogs are put through a final test, to ensure their. capabilities as a guide dog. The graduates are then matched -with the newly -arrived students. As a team, they work and live together for four" weeks, building their trust and, experience in day- to-day situations such asrossing . streets, boarding buses and riding th elevators. After graduation C.V.C.' encourages ongo- ing communication between the student and the school's staff to keep aware of their pro- gress and if necessary, to help with pro blems. Currently, C.V.C. has over 60 pup- pies placed in foster homes throughout On- tario. By the end of this year, they hope to have 20 graduates. Already, the school has graduated nine teams which in all cases were second dogs for visually impaired peo- ple. A dog walk-a-thon to raise money for the project will be held here Sunday, October 6. Pro-life demonstrates strength WINGHAM - Forty people from the area joined in one of the biggest pro-life rallies in Canadian history, at Queen's Park, Toronto, on September 21. Over 300 buses brought people represen- ting 79 pro-life groups from across 'Ontario to join Toronto Right.to Life in the rally. The crowd was estimated to number 35,000, with seven religious denominations represented. The purpose of the rally was to demonstrate the strength of the pro-life movement in On- tario and to express opposition to the killing of ,unborn children. Dr. Morris Schumiatcher, a leading civil rights lawyer in Canada,- was the keynote speaker. He said that the rally was the big- gest and most impressive gathering that he had. ever seen. He added that the Canadian Charter of Rights grants freedoms and the greatest freedom is.the right to life. "This is not a new 'right'," he said. "It goes back 4300 years in law and 3000 ylears in religion. The right to life is the view of the great lawyers of all time: Science has reinforced the teaching of religion and the precepts of law. Science tells us that a new hurnanbeing is formed when .a human sperm meets a human egg. Moreover, ultrasound reveals that the unborn child is a living being." Dr. Schumiatcher. said that more and more wornen•recoil from abortion and that doctor's are becoming reluctant to do them. He urged the.huge crowd to be (tf good heart .
