Automotive esoterica was typified by extrava- gance — many • speakers, many, amplifiers, many watts and many dollars. After all,: when the first se- rious attempts were made • to obtain high-fidelity in a car, extravagant means Were essential to achieve any measure of perfor- mance. • The "Big System" was something else! Multiple amplifiers, custpm-built sa- tellites and subwoofers, electronic crossovers and maybe even an. auxiliary battery for the amp rack. In the mid-70s, high-end 160.7 DRIVING SOUND autosound became a minor fad among the vulgar rich, sometimes costing *ell into five figures. - The technical advisors at MEI, a large Canadian manufacturer of mobile audio systems explain the diminishing emphasis on big systems this way. "Over the last ten years, we have been able to develop components in the mid- range price which will de- liver e*cellent sound. Our whole aim is to bring the cost. of auto sound down Attitudes to car maintenance (NC) — What does the term car. trouble mean to you? Before you answer; let me tell you what it means to me. It means some part, or - fabric, or system in my car that malfunctions, breaks or becomes worn out before its time. Car trouble Now, let me tell you what car trouble does notmean to me. It doesn't mean routine maintenance. A recent conversation with my mother got me thinking about peoples' at- titudes to their cars. My mother, who had just traded in a favorite car, was telling me the only trouble she had was when she had. to replace the brakes. I couldn't help wonder- ing if .she felt that way when she . and my father and to make it less labor in- tensive. ntensive. You give the custo- mer'. an appetite tor good sound, and let him. build on it as he can afford it. The ob- jetive is to start with a sys- tem that can be expanded without junking 'compo- nents, and to build on it step by step." Good, basiccomponents like those made by MEI are available and within reach of most automobile owners. Good driving sound doesn't have to cost a great deal of money. CARING FOR YOUR CAR John Walby 56-49 had to buy new shoes for 'your's truly' when I. was a kid. New 'brakes, new shoes, they're not trouble, they're just routine maintenance. You have to figure them into the cost of running cars and raising kids. Brake linings- wear out. So do wiper blades, tires, - spark plugs, shock ab- sorbers, and the 15,000 other things that make up the -average car. Now, they shouldn't wear out too soon or too often. If they do, they're: trouble; if they don't, they're routine. Fluids such as oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, anti-freeze/coolant, and windshield washer fluid need replenishing and. replacing. Keep it long enough, and eventually, your battery will give up the ghost. So will your exhaust system, your drive belts, yourair, oil and fuel filters. Wear and tear does that — routinely. - Maintenance • None of this means you have to' •sit passively by while your '.car disinte– grates before your very eyes. Regular maintenance by your technician slows down the aging process, keeping your car running smoothly longer. Anticipating normal wear and tear when you buy your new or used car helps you to budget. Just like resoling your shoes, routine maintenance is part of the cost of owning and operating an auto- mobile. Money for maintenance is well and necessarily spent — that is if you want to avoid something I like to call car trouble. John Walby trains automo- bile technicians for Esso Pet- roleum Canada.
